What is #bhamchat?

Those of you that follow our Twitter feed saw that one of the only tweets we sent out today involved joining us for a conversation about Birmingham starting at 6:30 p.m. tonight. Well, here’s a quick description of #bhamchat:

We wanted to see if folks wanted to talk about issues facing the city and the metro region. The topics will vary depending on what’s been going on around Birmingham. We’ll stay neutral on the issues and try to provide additional information as needed.

On the agenda: Langford reccommends cutting ONB budget

Most of the time when Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford makes an announcement, you’re never quite sure of what he means exactly. Take this morning for example when he casually spoke of cutting funding for Operation New Birmingham and moved on the next subject.

Needless to say this was a bit of an eyebrow raiser, but recognizing the potential for a conversation we sent out this tweet:

“Mayor Langford suggests that ONB be included in new Chamber/MDB/Region 20202 reorganization.”

Yes, we did notice the typo. Aside from that the local media had been pretty quite until now… This article posted by The Birmingham News removes any doubt about whether the mayor meant what he said. No official comments have been made by ONB, but considering that they received $450,000 in city funds last year, this could be a serious blow.

Free the Hops bill passed by Alabama State Senate

Visitors trying to Google “Free the Hops” and trying to access their website are currently meeting a 504 error. We’re thinking it’s because of the traffic being generated by fans of specialty & gourmet beers throughout the state celebrating the passage of HB 373 earlier this afternoon. This afternoon at 2:56 p.m., Free the Hops shared via Twitter words that its supporters have been waiting to hear since it was founded in 2004…

“FREE THE HOPS PASSED! WE DID IT”

The bill was passed while Senator Hank Erwin was outside of the Senate chamber in Montgomery. The bill currently awaits the signature of Governor Riley. The organization’s making a plea on their blog with additional information about the next step in the process.

UPDATE: For the love of squirrels atop Red Mountain

UPDATE #2: We’re happy to report that it was an issue with Twitter, and its profile is up again as of 9 p.m.

UPDATE: A quick check of the profile at 8:30 p.m. shows that it’s been taken down.

Seriously…

Apparently one of Birmingham’s furry “critters” has been visiting the news set at NBC 13‘s studios atop Red Mountain, notably during the morning broadcasts. How popular has the squirrel become? It’s already got its own Twitter profile (and 63 followers already).

All we can hope is that it doesn’t get to the point where it’s not getting fed making it bad for others or worse, it decides to make its presence known in a more visible fashion…

The Gardens have gone 2.0

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens have been embracing the world of social media in recent weeks, introducing a Twitter feed, @bbgardens, as well as launching a new blog called The Garden Dirt Blog. In addition, they have a Flickr profile and a fan page on Facebook.

An ever influential virtual influence on people learning about one of the state’s largest natural physical destinations.

Cable outage in Crestwood, Southside

We’ve just learned via Wade Kwon’s Twitter feed that cable and Internet service in Crestwood has been down since about 1 a.m. this morning. Another Terminal Twitter follower, _colm_, let us know that the Bright House service outage is also affecting sections of Birmingham’s Southside. According to Kwon’s tweet, a line was cut due to a fire on Southside last night, causing the disruption. There’s currently no estimate being provided for when service will be restored.

A soundtrack for our Urban Fabric

Head on over to Timetable and you’ll notice that you’ve got not one, but two chances to be dancing at your desk today (if you’re at work that is) courtesy of Ken Webb’s new weekly series on Live 100.5 FM, Urban Fabric with Ken Webb.

We’re not only posting the playlists for the show each week, which airs Saturday nights from 10:30 p.m. – 1:30 a.m., but we’re also uploading the Heavyweight selection to Timetable each week. We’ll also be updating the lists to include links to the original songs (in case you’re interested in getting them yourself).
