This year, join Stephen’s 13.1 mile team

Stephen Vinson at Railroad ParkA lot has changed since we first mentioned Stephen Vinson’s blog, Who Ate My Blog, back in July 2009. Back then we were trying to help him get the word out about pulling together a team for the 2010 BE&K 5K (now 5KBR).

This year he’s set an even bigger goal for himself – to complete this year’s Mercedes Half-Marathon.

He’s also been able to share his story with much larger platforms than before, including this year’s New Year’s Day cover story for The Birmingham News , being interviewed as part of the Champions of Health initiative and one of the subjects of a B-Metro piece on members of Birmingham’s local social media community.

His site’s also undergone a redesign since that first visit as well, meaning that you’ve got a great excuse to check-in and say hello to Stephen.

What are we building in Birmingham?

One of the people who spoke at last week’s launch event for the Birmingham Business Alliance was Birmingham’s mayor, Larry Langford. Among other things, he announced plans for tomorrow’s groundbreaking for the BJCC’s multipurpose facility (a.k.a. dome) and other progress on projects throughout The Magic City.

As people begin to talk about the feasibility of the dome and other projects, they may want to take a look at this story published by The Next American City about whether or not a city should take the leap into convention center expansion.

On the agenda: Langford reccommends cutting ONB budget

ONB 50th anniversary logo - yourcitycenter.comMost of the time when Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford makes an announcement, you’re never quite sure of what he means exactly. Take this morning for example when he casually spoke of cutting funding for Operation New Birmingham and moved on the next subject.

Needless to say this was a bit of an eyebrow raiser, but recognizing the potential for a conversation we sent out this tweet:

Mayor Langford suggests that ONB be included in new Chamber/MDB/Region 20202 reorganization.”

Yes, we did notice the typo. Aside from that the local media had been pretty quite until now… This article posted by The Birmingham News  removes any doubt about whether the mayor meant what he said. No official comments have been made by ONB, but considering that they received $450,000 in city funds last year, this could be a serious blow.

Across the pond: The follow-up, Part 2

We were going to do a follow-up about the fallout from our city’s skyline being used in a mailing about recycling efforts to more than 700,000… in the UK. Instead, André (that’s me) was interviewed for a story that was published in The Birmingham Post early this morning (their time) about a similar incident that happened over here last year. The Associated Press ran their own account of the story as well, interviewing our Chamber’s very own Melanie Davis.

The Birmingham Mail even got into the act with their take on the situation.

More coverage in the air

Delta Sky Magazine - Heart of the City

Well, we’ve become quite the popular city to write about. Last year the city enjoyed coverage in Southwest’s in-flight magazine focused on Rickwood Field and the Rickwood Classic. In May, Delta Air Lines published a story about the city in general in May’s Sky Magazine. Luckily, the story is still up on the Internet, so you can see what they wrote about us…

Fallout from last night’s 60 Minutes

Don SiegelmanThe Alabama Republican Party wasted no time in sharing their response to last night’s report on CBS’ 60 Minutes about allegations that former governor Don Siegelman’s prosecution was politically motivated (even though we weren’t necessarily that fast in posting these links ourselves – we’re still upgrading the site). Check out Wade on Birmingham’s recent post on this to catch up on the background. And it looks like it’s far from over.
