Larry Langford at the BJCC. Bob Farley/f8PhotoWord of the guilty verdict against former Birmingham mayor Larry Langford has spread through the media in the last 20+ hours. This would include a story filed last night during NPR‘s All Things Consideredthis report turned in by The New York Times‘ Shaila Dewan (it was on page 19 of Section A); this piece filed by HULIQ.com; even The Huffington Post decided to add their voice to the coverage. UPDATE: A trial free zone starting Monday

I figured that would get your attention here on a Friday afternoon as you’re getting ready to enjoy a mostly rain-free weekend.

I thought you’d like it if we told you now instead of waiting until Monday to do so…

There are no plans to post anything – and I mean ANYTHING – about the pending Federal trial of Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford – until a conclusion to the matter is determined. Well, except for the piece I’ll post tomorrow morning that was posted early Saturday afternoon explaining why. (We’ll link to it from here).

Enjoy your Friday!

How crooked is Birmingham?

Local blogger Wade Kwon is tackling this question via a month-long series on Wade on Birmingham, taking a look at some of Birmingham’s Biggest Crooks. The site describes the series as “a celebration of Birmingham’s most notorious crooks, whether they be liars, thieves, extortionists, swindlers or thugs.” If you’re in love with RSS feeds, you can even subscribe to one just to follow along.

The series’ calendar ends on August 31, the same day that Birmingham’s mayor, Larry Langford, is scheduled to go on trial on federal bribery and conspiracy charges.

What are we building in Birmingham?

One of the people who spoke at last week’s launch event for the Birmingham Business Alliance was Birmingham’s mayor, Larry Langford. Among other things, he announced plans for tomorrow’s groundbreaking for the BJCC’s multipurpose facility (a.k.a. dome) and other progress on projects throughout The Magic City.

As people begin to talk about the feasibility of the dome and other projects, they may want to take a look at this story published by The Next American City about whether or not a city should take the leap into convention center expansion.

Mayor in car accident Tuesday AM, is OK

larry175This morning Birmingham’s mayor, Larry Langford, was involved in a car accident on Ensley Avenue. According to several reports (and his appearance during this morning’s City Council meeting), he was uninjured while the vehicle he was traveling in was damaged.

While The Birmingham News simply stated that he was on his way to work, some people thought to read into the location of the accident, including Birmingham Weekly. The mayor reported to the council that he was on the city’s west side in order to check on the progress of the Fair Park redevelopment project currently underway, a statement relayed to followers of the city’s Twitter profile (including us).
