JeffCo Commission District 1 election tomorrow (& July 13)

election signTomorrow’s runoff election is specifically for residents of Jefferson County living in District 1 and pertains to the commission seat vacated when William Bell became mayor of Birmingham, AL earlier this year. The winner serves the remainder of Bell’s term, set to expire at the end of the year.

The crazy thing is that you’ll be given a choice between Birmingham City Councilman Johnathan Austin and retired General George Bowman tomorrow – and on July 13. The second election will determine the Democratic nominee for November’s general election.

Confused yet?

The Birmingham News‘ editorial board explains the situation as clearly as it can be, but it can still be a little disturbing if you think about it. One scenario, for example, could lead us to have to hold another special election to fill Austin’s unexpired term at City Hall if he’s successful tomorrow.

If you’re a resident of District 1 and you want some help figuring out just who to vote for, the Birmingham Young Democrats are teaming up with Women of Will (WOW) to host a candidates runoff forum this evening at 5:30 p.m. at Cosmos Sports Bar and Grill in Norwood.

Candidates for Alabama’s 7th Congressional District seat in Congress – Terri Sewell and Shelia Smoot – will be there too. You’ll only have to vote for them once (& won’t have to do that until July 13).

Meet Soledad, The Bottletree’s fawn

Soledad. acnatta/FlickrA notable member of The Bottletree‘s family has been on an extended vacation recently. The fawn that normally graces the liquor shelves of the Avondale eatery and music venue hitched a ride with London-based band The xx shortly after their March 23 performance there. They decided to name the fawn “Soledad” and they captured images from the journey and shared them via a blog. Soledad also apparently set up her own Twitter account but never used it. The fawn has recently returned to its perch overlooking the happenings at The Bottetree’s bar.

According to the most recent post, more adventures will be shared soon.

It was not the first item to ever hitch a ride with the band – you may also want to meet Richard the Hamster

UPDATE: The Lego Store’s coming to The Galleria

UPDATE: 7.14.2009The Birmingham News has now reported the story and has additional information.

Yes, it’s true – no longer do you have to travel down to Orlando to get your Lego fix. you won’t have to drive all the way to Charlotte either (since they’re getting one too). You’ll just have to go down the road to Hoover and the Riverchase Galleria…

Metro Birmingham is one of twelve U.S. locations announced for the building block’s stand alone stores to be opened in the near future. The store’s site is already up, allowing folks interested in specifics to keep track of the store’s progress. Now, if we can only score some Lego sets based on Birmingham landmarks, similar to the Frank Lloyd Wright series (or a relaunch of the Zack commercials)…

UPDATE: For the love of squirrels atop Red Mountain

UPDATE #2: We’re happy to report that it was an issue with Twitter, and its profile is up again as of 9 p.m.

UPDATE: A quick check of the profile at 8:30 p.m. shows that it’s been taken down.

Apparently one of Birmingham’s furry “critters” has been visiting the news set at NBC 13‘s studios atop Red Mountain, notably during the morning broadcasts. How popular has the squirrel become? It’s already got its own Twitter profile (and 63 followers already).

All we can hope is that it doesn’t get to the point where it’s not getting fed making it bad for others or worse, it decides to make its presence known in a more visible fashion

Learn Spanish… from the bus system?

Screenshot of bjcta.org What’s New page, accessed 9.16.2008.

Not quite, but yes! It was a little weird when we visited the BJCTA’s (a.k.a. our bus system’s) website earlier today while getting ready for the Tuesday morning City Council post. We went back later to check on it; the item posted at the top of the What’s New items section of their website is a link that takes people to another site, Learn Spanish Today, that offers people to take free Spanish lessons – via a widget dictionary that can be installed on your website or blog or another link on the site.

Before you ask, yes, we did email the BJCTA about the link – we hope to share their response with you soon.

Introducing Larry’s 8-Ball

Larry’s 8 Ball logo - WERC 960 AM

WERC 960AM’s logo for Larry’s 8 Ball. Special to The Terminal.

So maybe we’re a little envious of not thinking of this first…

The folks over at WERC-AM have decided to introduce the World Wide Web to Larry’s 8-Ball. We got an email from the ClearChannel owned station providing a link to their website’s newest feature.

It’s quite simple – think of a question, click on the ball to give it a shake and then turn up the volume to hear Larry’s answer.

Check it out for yourself.
