The Memorial Day weekend countdown is here…

So let’s give you a few things to do to fill that last half hour fifteen minutes…

I was one of three bloggers that were interviewed for this week’s episode of WBHM‘s arts and culture program Tapestry. The segment was on blogging and featured myself, Wade Kwon and Ashley Umbaugh. You can check out the story as it ran or the excerpts from my extended interview. If you want to hear it on the radio, it’s on tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. on 90.3 FM.

Our conductor Jason Donaldson’s still suffering from the spill he took on his bike a couple of weeks ago, but he’s pulled together a great set of musical options for you to check out for the weekend. You can always follow Jason on Twitter to see what else he’s up to.

The Hops are free! It’s time to celebrate!

Free the Hops glass - courtesy of freethehops.orgThis morning Governor Riley signed the “Free the Hops” bill into law, news that seemed to make most of the folks here in Birmingham and the rest of the state of Alabama quite happy as Memorial Day weekend begins.

Here in the Magic City, it’s been announced that there will be a celebration this evening at The J. Clyde beginning at 5 p.m. that will feature a cask ale courtesy of Good People Brewing Company. It also means that all drinks and appeitzers will be $4.

Random Shots: A year-round Pepper Place Market?

Still waiting to get some additional information about this space, but it is currently being worked on in Birmingham’s Pepper Place. It appears that it will be another option for those seeking fresh produce in Birmingham (in addition to Jones Valley Urban Farm and the Jefferson County Farmers Market on Finley Avenue and a few others recently profiled in this Birmingham Weekly post). The sign says that the Farmers Market Cooperative will be “coming soon” though.

On the agenda: Langford reccommends cutting ONB budget

ONB 50th anniversary logo - yourcitycenter.comMost of the time when Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford makes an announcement, you’re never quite sure of what he means exactly. Take this morning for example when he casually spoke of cutting funding for Operation New Birmingham and moved on the next subject.

Needless to say this was a bit of an eyebrow raiser, but recognizing the potential for a conversation we sent out this tweet:

“Mayor Langford suggests that ONB be included in new Chamber/MDB/Region 20202 reorganization.”

Yes, we did notice the typo. Aside from that the local media had been pretty quite until now… This article posted by The Birmingham News  removes any doubt about whether the mayor meant what he said. No official comments have been made by ONB, but considering that they received $450,000 in city funds last year, this could be a serious blow.

Birmingham Heritage Festival to return in August

Birmingham Heritage Festival logo - courtesy of websiteThis morning the Birmingham Heritage Festival announced that it will return, with the music portion of the festival taking place August 14-16 in downtown Birmingham’s Linn Park. The festival will also include community empowerment seminars running from August 11-13 at Boutwell Auditorium.

Urbanham.com posted the official press release which contains the names of the first acts to be confirmed for this year’s festival as well as a link to its new website. Announced acts include Keyshia Cole, Angie Stone, Chaka Khan, Flo Rida, and Atlantic Starr. The website also lists Musiq Soulchild as scheduled to perform though they were not included on the press release.

There had been an announcement made via the Internet in late January.

Wish for Fish at McWane this summer

Wish for Fish - McWane Science CenterMcWane Science Center is adding a new Shark & Ray Touch Tank to their World of Water aquarium in July and they’re looking for folks to help them stock it. You can support the new interactive experience as a Guppy, a Sting Ray or a Bonnethead Shark among other things. You can visit their website to contribute to Wish for Fish or if you’re on Facebook, become a member of their Cause and spread the word!

Have some green eggs and ham this morning

greeneggshamIf you’re close to Regions Center Plaza this morning between 7 and 9:30 a.m., you might be tempted to stop on by for breakfast, courtesy of Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College. Breakfast wraps will be served with coffee provided by Crestwood Coffee Company for $10 to help raise funds for the Green Resource Center for Alabama (GRCA). FYI, GRCA’s mission is to promote sustainable social, economic and environmental practices. You can drive-thru or walk up at the corner of 20th Street and 5th Avenue North.

If you feel one of those Fridays coming on, you can also get a chair massage for $5. Think of it as a relaxing way to get to work late for a good reason…
