#ALsnOMG11: The next day

A better perspective - #ALsnOMG11. acnatta/FlickrWe figured we’d share the view from just outside our window this morning. It may look beautiful, but it’s not something you’ll want to venture out in this morning if you don’t have to.

We’re currently hearing multiple reports of dangerous and impassible roads, layers of snow and ice blanketing the streets of metro Birmingham, AL and most area businesses (and government offices) are closed. While it’ll probably be nice to take a couple of pictures from right outside your door (we’ve set up a page with all of the ways you may do so & we’ll share any that come in), we’re hoping that folks for the most part stay inside today.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving turkey. WishUponACupcake/FlickrBirmingham’s just a little quieter than normal as people begin to make that journey over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house (or wherever their journeys may be taking them today). It is known as the busiest traveling day of the year, but we knew there’d be a few of you checking in…

So we’re hoping that you’ll be willing to share your stories with the rest of The Terminal’s community during the next couple of days. Today’s Magic City Question hopes that we’ll learn more about long-standing and new traditions for the holiday while we’re taking a page out of The New York Times‘ book and seeing if folks are willing to share photos of their pending feasts and all of the preparation that goes along with it.

No matter what you choose to do, we hope that you enjoy Thanksgiving tomorrow!

A look inside The Pizitz Building

The Heaviest CornerThe folks over at The Heaviest Corner were able to get inside of The Pizitz Building recently and take a look at how the historic structure currently looks (they aren’t sharing exactly how they got in however). They’d already written about the building earlier this year (February).

They were also able to take some photos of the proposed plans for the building’s renovation.

Plans were for the 1923 building were announced building back in January via The Birmingham News after several attempts to redevelop the building (including this one from 2003).

The developer, Bayer Properties, has created a page for the project, scheduled for completion in 2010, on its official website. Both law firm Baker Donelson and Forest Park grocer V. Richards have announced their intention to move into the building once the project is completed.

UPDATE: These have not been the only photos taken of the Pizitz in recent months. A comment received on the site last night included a link to Naaman Fletcher’s Flickr photoset taken over two years. FYI – the comment was deleted because it violated The Terminal’s terms of use policy.

Travelogue: Not quite abandoned yet

A look up into the Lyric Theater. acnatta/FlickrJJ MacCrimmon is a photographer out of Huntsville, AL who recently posted these images of the historic Lyric Theater on his blog Orbits of a deluded mind. He’s promised to share additional photos from his trip this past July soon.

The upper floors of the building that housed the theater has been vacant for many years now, but as many of you may know (and as JJ points out in his first post of photos back in December) there are many people working to restore the property and have it see use again as a performance venue for Birmingham, AL. The Lyric is currently owned by Birmingham Landmarks, Inc., the organization that currently operates The Alabama Theatre. Folks looking for additional information about the theater can check out this entry on BhamWiki or this post from Cinema Treasures.

Folks looking to find out how they can help with the theater’s renovation efforts should check out the official Lyric Theater website.

Share your snow photos with The Terminal

A snowman on the Birmingham Green acnatta/FlickrThe Magic City looks more like a winter wonderland this morning than normal after a snowstorm passed through the city yesterday afternoon and evening, leaving the city with a rare 1-2″ inches of snow depending on where you were.

Whether at the Railroad Park construction site, the Birmingham Green (shown here) or over the mountain, It looked pretty cool yesterday and it’s a safe bet that you thought so too.

A photo gallery’s been set up on the site to showcase snowfall images you may want to share from yesterday or today. A few photos have already up too and we’re hoping that you’ll feel like adding yours to the mix. There will be definitely be some additional photos posted during the day from the site’s contributors.

Hopefully you were able to stay safe last night as roads iced over and area officials made the right decision to close most state highways and access to elevated portions of metro Birmingham interstates. Continue to use caution while out there this morning.

Random Shots: a snapshot of Birmingham

Bob Farley/f8PhotoA few weeks ago we posted some photos from the Lyric Theatre in advance of the open house and included a photo of a mural of the city that was being stored in the building (it’s image #9).

Well, the centennial mural’s four pieces have been moved to the new home of the Birmingham Jefferson History Museum at the former Young & Vann building downtown. They were so large they had to open up the wall to get it into its new home. The Terminal‘s Bob Farley took a closer look at the mural and provided these photos to share with you in The Gallery. According to their website, we’ll get a chance to take a closer look in person come next spring.

Tour the Lyric this afternoon

The historic Lyric andAlabama Theatres will be open for tours this Sunday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. Historian Dan Liles will be on hand to give the history of the Lyric. Organ crew chief Larry Donaldson will be available to answer questions about Alabama Theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ and the Alabama’s technical director, Jeff Kizziah will be up in the projection booth.
