the35212’s founder plans to expand citywide

the35212 logoCharlotte Donlon started the35212 two years ago as a way to help focus on the people, places and events in the neighborhoods contained within, including Crestwood and Woodlawn. She was the focus of one of my first Digital City columns for B-Metro Magazine. Now, she’s announced two different initiatives that should raise the profile of the site across the city.

There’s currently an effort underway to raise funds to produce an “old school community newsletter” for the site via Kickstarter. As of this post (with nine days to go), they’ve received pledges for approximately 55% of the funds necessary to start the project.

Donlon’s also announced plans to do similar sites for each of the city’s 28 zip codes. Each zip code’s web domain would be similar to the35212 with a central site, initially planning to be headquartered at findingbhm.wordpress.com, connecting them all. She’s posted additional information about the expansion of her project here. She’s also laid out initial plans for sponsorship of the current site.

A look inside The Pizitz Building

Pizitz Building Interior. The Heaviest CornerThe folks over at The Heaviest Corner were able to get inside of The Pizitz Building recently and take a look at how the historic structure currently looks (they aren’t sharing exactly how they got in however). They’d already written about the building earlier this year (February).

They were also able to take some photos of the proposed plans for the building’s renovation.

Plans were for the 1923 building were announced building back in January via The Birmingham News after several attempts to redevelop the building (including this one from 2003).

The developer, Bayer Properties, has created a page for the project, scheduled for completion in 2010, on its official website. Both law firm Baker Donelson and Forest Park grocer V. Richards have announced their intention to move into the building once the project is completed.

UPDATE: These have not been the only photos taken of the Pizitz in recent months. A comment received on the site last night included a link to Naaman Fletcher’s Flickr photoset taken over two years. FYI – the comment was deleted because it violated The Terminal’s terms of use policy.

Council supports Rickwood proposal, but not funding

The Birmingham City Council just voted on items pertaining to a potential restoration project for America’s oldest ballpark, Rickwood Field.

The ballpark is located on Birmingham’s West Side and will turn 100 years old next spring. The following was taken verbatim from the City’s Facebook group, as sent by Alicia Brown:

Mayor Langford has proposed the formation of the Baseball Museum that will honor both the Negro Baseball League and the Southern League. Some Council members expressed concern about the “change in scope” by including the white leagues, but Mayor Langford explained that Birmingham has matured and is ready to recognize all of its history. Council voted a resolution to support the museum, but did not approve funding, delaying the project.

Follow the progress of a “promise”

Children’s Hospital broke ground last week on its new expansion facility on Birmingham’s Southside, one that will allow them to commit to being a greener part of our regional community. As part of the effort to make folks aware of the expansion of the hospital as part of the insitution’s “Keeping Promises” fundraising campaign, folks can keep up with the construction via webcam as well as see what the completed project will look like and be kept aware of road closings and events associated with it.

We’ll try to remind you from time to time to check in as well.

Be careful if you’re trying to get around in Five Points South this evening. A few blocks of the popular bohemian district in Birmingham’s Southside have been temporarily fenced off to vehicular traffic.

Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford and city public works employees were spotted putting the final touches on the district’s recent street and lamp post renovation project earlier today.

A strange two-part request

I’m not exactly sure if this will work, especially since there are so many folks that will probably not see this in time, but it doesn’t hurt to ask…

We did the math last night and figured that there’s got to be at least 50 It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham (Black Terminal) t-shirts currently floating around The Magic City. We also figure that most of you will be at least considering showing up at the Magic City Art Connection during this weekend (rain or shine). So, we were wondering if it would be possible to get most of you to wear your shirts this weekend when you head out there – I’ll wear mine on Saturday.  We just figured it would be a pretty cool way to let folks know who’s reading the site (and maybe even get some more folks involved).

There’s a second part to this request – to ask all of you that currently have shirts to send in a picture to us of you wearing it. We’ll share it with everybody else in a new gallery that we’re setting up as soon as we get the first images in. Send your photos to photos@bhamterminal.com or if you’re a Flickr member, add them to our Flickr group.

Thanks a lot and enjoy the weekend!
