Full day of events, recognition planned in Birmingham for Veterans Day

VeteransDay2013After gathering Monday night to honor former United States senator Bob Dole at the National Veterans Award dinner at the Sheraton Birmingham, a full day of events await the city as it stops to honor our military veterans. The calendar of events posted to the National Veterans Day’s website include:

The parade itself begins at 1:30 p.m. at 18th Street and Rev. Abraham Woods, Jr. Blvd. (a.k.a., 8th Avenue N.); the site also has a map of the parade route available for review. As it begins, UAB will be holding its third annual wreath-laying ceremony on the university’s Campus Green (1:30 p.m.) on the city’s Southside.

A live stream of the parade will be available on their site (click on the link to access the stream and to view previous parades).

The BJCTA (MAX) will be offering veterans free bus rides all-day on Tuesday; they must present an active military ID, VA Health card, or retired military identification card to the bus operator. See their flyer for more information. Veterans will also be offered free admission to all state parks and federal parks and sites, with the Birmingham Zoo extending the offer to current active military personnel as well.

Sidewalk Film Festival runs Indiegogo campaign to offset title sponsor loss

2014 sidewalk festival logoThis weekend saw the Sidewalk Film Festival (formerly known as the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival) celebrate its sixteenth year of bringing independent film to Birmingham, AL. Festival award winners were announced on Sunday evening at the historic Alabama Theater; here’s the rundown via AL.com. The festival went on this year without the benefit of a title sponsor.

The nonprofit parent organization for the festival, The Alabama Moving Picture Association, is in the final hours of an Indiegogo campaign organized to raise the $16,000 needed to offset the resulting gap in funding. According to the campaign’s landing page, ticket sales for the festival only account for one-third of the organization’s annual cash budget. As of the time of this posting, they’d raised 76% (approximately $12,138) of their goal. It is a flexible campaign — meaning they will receive any funds pledged by 11:59 p.m. PT this evening (August 25).

Help Sojourns continue its journey

Sojourns GoFund screenshotMelissa Kendrick and her store, Sojourns, need Birmingham’s help. Long before cups of coffee were being poured at Urban Standard or folks were sitting down to a cold one at all of the trendy bars gracing downtown Birmingham, she took a chance in 2005 and opened what is arguably one of the first businesses to be truly part of the city center’s revival.

According to the GoFundMe campaign set up by Max Blalock on Tuesday afternoon, a sewer line at her house collapse that is not covered by her homeowners insurance policy is placing Kendrick in a financial bind. While a status update on Facebook let us know she’s secured a part-time job, perhaps sharing the link to the page and seeing just how close she might be able to get to the goal would help too.

Incidentally, she’s also going to need some volunteers for an upcoming fashion show benefiting the Rape Response program at the Crisis Center…

National Pancake Day is almost here!

National Pancake Day logoTuesday morning brings with a chance to enjoy a tasty tradition, while giving you an opportunity to support an extremely worthy cause.

IHOP will once again give away one short stack (read: three (3) buttermilk pancakes) per dine-in customer at participating restaurants as part of their National Pancake Day celebration. They hope that you’ll in return leave a donation and help them raise $2.3 million for the Children’s Miracle Network.

The network includes our own Children’s Hospital located on Birmingham’s Southside. They happened to send out a friendly reminder via Twitter on Monday afternoon. All four Birminghamarea locations will be participating this year.

This is the first time in five years that the promotion will not take place on Fat (Shrove) Tuesday but a week earlier.

Hats and Horns 2010 benefits Bell Center, Operation School Bell

Hats and Horns logo. Courtesy of official website. We haven’t written anything about the annual Hat and Horns Societé New Year’s Eve party since late 2007 (and that’s a shame). The group was formed in 2000 and theirs one of the only celebrations that gives all of its proceeds to area non-profits.

This year, The Bell Center and the Assistance League of Birmingham‘s Operation School Bell will benefit from tickets and t-shirts sold for the event’s 10th anniversary.

The tickets are currently $125 per person, with options available to purchase tables with Mother Mercy and Hash Brown providing musical entertainment. We can’t tell if you’ll be able to purchase a shirt and have it mailed to you or not, but they’re available for $15 a piece and can be picked up the night of the event.

BigBham lends a hand to Jimmie Hale Mission this holiday

Jimmie Hale Mission logoBigBham, a Birmingham, AL-based website and e-mail marketing company associated with BirminghamMenus.com, has found a way to spread the holiday spirit. They are asking their more than 15,000 subscribers to their emails to donate to the Jimmie Hale Mission.

The ask started on December 20 and will continue through tomorrow (Thursday) evening. BigBham owner Nate Schmidt has been quoted by news outlets about the project about how it came to be:

“We called the Jimmie Hale Mission and asked if they would let us run a ‘deal in reverse’, instead of getting an amazing deal this week, people can give one.”

The site kicked it off by purchasing 100 meals themselves. So far more than 1,500 meals have been purchased with 100% of all proceeds going to the nonprofit.

You’ve got until Thursday. Don’t forget you can give to Jimmie Hale Mission all year long.

Go shopping for the AEC

Alabama Environmental Council logoIt’s almost lunchtime, so you may be considering where to go for lunch or if you have some time to run some errands. Well if you happen to find yourself at the Whole Foods Market in Mountain Brook (or you’re not sure where to go for lunch, dinner or groceries), 5% of all sales made today out there will go to benefit the Alabama Environmental Council (this also gives you a chance to check out their new website).

Staff and volunteers from the AEC will be on hand to distribute materials (including their brand new stickers) and selling t-shirts among other things. Plus, if you get out there before 3 p.m. you’ll have a chance to drop of e-waste for recycling thanks to the folks at Technical Knock Out.
