A Picture of Health atop the Redmont tonight

healthposterIf you’re still looking for something to do this evening, Birmingham Bombshells is holding a pretty nice party tonight atop the historic Redmont Hotel in downtown Birmingham, AL. The event, A Picture of Health, is a benefit to raise money for ovarian cancer research and in particular the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation. It starts at 7 p.m. and it gives you a chance to enjoy one of the most breathtaking views of The Magic City while dressing up in 1940s-era glamour and bid on items as part of the “Every Girl’s Fantasy” auction.

There are still tickets available, at least you’ve got until 5 p.m. to purchase them in advance. We’d love to hear that they sold out tonight…

Wish for Fish at McWane this summer

Wish for Fish - McWane Science CenterMcWane Science Center is adding a new Shark & Ray Touch Tank to their World of Water aquarium in July and they’re looking for folks to help them stock it. You can support the new interactive experience as a Guppy, a Sting Ray or a Bonnethead Shark among other things. You can visit their website to contribute to Wish for Fish or if you’re on Facebook, become a member of their Cause and spread the word!

Have some green eggs and ham this morning

greeneggshamIf you’re close to Regions Center Plaza this morning between 7 and 9:30 a.m., you might be tempted to stop on by for breakfast, courtesy of Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College. Breakfast wraps will be served with coffee provided by Crestwood Coffee Company for $10 to help raise funds for the Green Resource Center for Alabama (GRCA). FYI, GRCA’s mission is to promote sustainable social, economic and environmental practices. You can drive-thru or walk up at the corner of 20th Street and 5th Avenue North.

If you feel one of those Fridays coming on, you can also get a chair massage for $5. Think of it as a relaxing way to get to work late for a good reason…

One more chance to help Birmingham go to SXSW

flyer-forwebIf you didn’t get a chance to go the last Gas Money concert to help pay for the 8 (that’s right – EIGHT) bands playing in Austin next week as part of SXSW, tonight’s your opportunity to make up for it.

Tonight five bands (four of them making the trip to Austin) will take the stage at WorkPlay for the second of two concerts to raise funds to help pull off that show. Tickets will be $12 at the door and all of the money raised will go towards covering expenses for the show in Austin (more on that in a bit), gas money (of course), other transportation costs and hopefully a little extra for their pockets. So, head on out and support the following bands this evening:

Indian Red (featuring Preston Lovinggood)
The Grenadines
Vulture Whale
13ghosts
Through the Sparks

Now, about that show in Austin…

If you’re looking for a way to unwind after you file that income tax return on April 15 (and based on last year’s site visits for the day, a lot of you will), then you’ll love the fact that the Birmingham Botanical Gardens has just announced that the annual Spring Plant Sale will be starting on April 16 starting with a special preview party that evening.

The event will go through April 19 and is the largest in the state of Alabama with more than 85,000 plants for sale. Last year’s sale raised more than $200,000 for education programs.

They’re planning to hold two fundraisers in the coming months (the first is coming up on November 16 at The Bottletree) and have lined up a great stable of sponsors so far for their efforts, not to mention a two-day event being planned at Wicked Ways Tattoo Studio. You’ll also want to check out this video on NBC 13’s website from October. You’ll also want to visit their MySpace profile to learn about how you can get involved.

Waiters pool tips for co-worker’s medical battle

Go to La Paz Thursday night (that’s tonight) and that tip you leave for good service will go to a good cause. The wait staff is pooling their tips to help out a co-worker, Alfredo Colin. The long-time employee and married father of four is recovering from surgery to remove a brain tumor. The surgery was a success but Colin is now facing mounting medical bills without the benefit of insurance. From 4 p.m. to midnight, all tips will be donated to Colin and the funds matched by La Paz. La Paz Restaurante and Cantina is located in Crestline Village at 99 Euclid Ave.

Thanks to Madison over at B’ham Weekly for the heads up.
