It was bound to happen… The South’s largest Black newspaper (Birmingham-based) has updated their website and we think it looks pretty good. Here’s the link to the new Birmingham Times site – go check it out and share your thoughts.

So just before I was about to say that it was a shame that al.com hadn’t gotten it’s own Twitter profile yet – poof! – it magically appears.
Most of the mainstream media in the city recently joined the Twitterverse (even if they aren’t all joining in the conversation that it’s supposed to be spawning). Luckily though, unlike the tweets sent out by The Birmingham News, the links from the al.com feed actually take you directly to the stories directly.
Still waiting for that first Fox 6 tweet though…

CBS 42 has become the latest media outlet to add Twitter to their arsenal of news dissemination. They follow ABC 33/40, NBC 13 and The Birmingham News into the Twitterverse, leaving one major media outlet out of the tweeting – Fox 6. No word yet on when they’ll finally join the rest of us on this one…

The Mayor of the Airwave’s returning to the AM dial beginning Monday. Frank Matthews “retired” from talk radio shortly after the election of Larry Langford as mayor of Birmingham to become the co-director of the Mayor’s Office of Citizen’s Assistance. Now he’ll be pulling double duty as he takes to the airwaves weekdays from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on WATV (900 AM).
Matthews did recently appear on the radio, though only for a few seconds, during a heated exchange with Matt Murphy on Murphy’s program.
As the Birmingham News article relays, he’s not the only local civil servant with a spot on the dial. The question remains how he’ll balance those two hats that he’s going to have to wear…

Birmingham’s mayor made the front pages of two of the area’s print publications, though not necessarily for good reasons. The stories result from both The Birmingham News and Birmingham Weekly obtaining copies (warning – it’s a big file) of what has been identified as Larry Langford’s June 2007 testimony to the SEC (no, the other one).
The Birmingham News ran their coverage below the fold of this morning’s paper. Their story focused on the then county commission president’s testimony that he regularly asked recipients of county contracts to give to charities that he was associated with and controlled.
Kyle Whitmire follows up two teases on the Weekly’s blog (here’s the latest one) with a War on Dumb filing (we’ll link when it gets posted) that digs a little deeper into the mayor’s testimony, contrasting it with comments made during the mayor’s inaugural address.
Definitely an interesting time for these stories to break, especially considering some of the heated discussion that took place at Tuesday’s marathon council meeting.

First of all, here’s a link to the report that everyone’s been talking about surrounding the city of Birmingham’s school system.
Now let’s take a look at how the local media’s been covering this story since it broke yesterday…
Throughout most of last night’s coverage, outlets stressed Mims’ acceptance of responsibility for the existence of two reports. Perhaps the best example of this is in NBC 13’s coverage. They were also able to provide the opinion of the state superintendent, who was in town for the proceedings.

Everyone seems to be taking away something different from yesterday’s first State of the City address presented by Birmingham mayor Larry Langford. For those that want to know what he actually said, you’ll want to go to CBS 42’s website (get to their local news section) scroll through their online videos and click on the link to the full 30-minute speech. (Yes, it’s there; we actually have a copy of that coverage, but it’s their video, so check it out if you’ve got time).
