Birmingham’s newest municipal website makes its debut

City of Birmingham website 2014 650Visitors to the city of Birmingham’s website (birminghamal.gov) since close of business last night have been pleasantly surprised. The newest iteration of the city’s digital facing first impression has launched quietly, though it is our understanding a more formal announcement should be forthcoming. It replaces the one used (with only minor tweaks) since January 2008This latest version was created by locally based web design firm Kinetic Communications. They have also been working on a new Birmingham City Council website that launched last month, replacing one in use since May 2012. The sites are so similar visually most visitors will not notice they are not one in the same when navigating.

This redesign is the latest effort to tackle an issue faced by many cities — how to build a useful website for its citizens and business owners. A look back at earlier iterations should give a pretty good idea of just how far the city’s come from 2001.

What’s all this talk about the USFL being back?

USFL Logo 2012There have been posts written about the All-American Football League and the United Football League wanting to bring football back to Birmingham (and, as a result, to historic Legion Field) during the early days of the sites existence. For some reason there were not posts talking about the potential launch of the American Football League in 2011 and our potential franchise, the Birmingham Yellowhammers (though that one never got off the ground either).

For some reason though, there’s a little more hope tied to the most recent effort to bring back professional football to Birmingham – especially since its tied to the return of the USFL – sort of. Who knows, it could even mean a return of the Birmingham Stallions.

The Washington Post filed a report late last week about the pending return of the league next spring as a developmental league – an announcement originally made by EndZone Sports Management, LLC, the league’s owners, during the Vegas Unwrapped show (and the company’s website) back on February 15. It was also reported by NBC Sports in April, though considering what day the story ran, we could see why folks wouldn’t necessarily believe it.

Something adding to the increased attention in recent days may be the fact that the cities selected for the relaunch are expected to be announced this summer. Considering that according to the WP story (as well as the pieces from the Birmingham Business Journal and The Birmingham News) there were only 10 cities being looked at for eight slots, the Magic City’s chances are looking pretty good so far.

The Terminal T is back

Terminal T shirt frontWhen we launched the site 4½ years ago, one of the things that we did was go about getting a t-shirt printed that summed up the goals and aspirations of the site. We had no idea that the “It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham” t-shirt would be as popular as it was among our early readers.

We figured it was time to bring the shirt back – partially because of the number of folks asking about it, partially as a way to help spread the word about our video series and partially as a first step in securing additional funds to help expand the site’s offerings.

We’re hoping that at least 250 people will order either a black (or white) Terminal T as a way to show your support for the website in the coming days. The shirts cost $15 each, with an additional $5 being charged for shipping ($20 total). We do not have a physical location for pick-up at this time so we’ll only be delivering via U.S. Mail.

Be Birmingham contest reopens!

bhamprecip-003

That was the internal name for the “orange sign” contest that we recently attempted. We received one entry for the contest from Rod Needham (that’s it up above), at which time we learned that because of changing servers last week, folks may have found it difficult to submit their entries. BTW, Rod’s submission, which will be uploaded to the set by this afternoon, said that he thinks of “precipitation” when he thinks of Birmingham… You’ll have to read his entry. That said, I figured we’d reopen the contest, starting… NOW! NOTE: It closes on Thursday, March 12, at 5 p.m.

It’s still Hip to be Civic

I couldn’t pass up a chance to plug Catalyst’s new website before we continue on this morning’s food kick. This evening they’ll officically launch their redesigned website with an event at Rojo featuring a performance by Matthew Mayfield and a remote by Live 100.5 FM. If you’ve got a moment, stop on by, especially since the first 75 that show up get free drink vouchers. If you get a chance, send us some photos from the event so we can share them with our readers… just saying…

Speaking of switches…

Those of you that follow the r3vrb.com and bham.fm may begin to notice that both sites are loading a little slower than normal this afternoon. If you haven’t heard yet (or haven’t visited them before) allow us to elaborate.

The sites, maintained by former Timetable music writers Sam George and Whitney Sides respectively, have decided to join forces to become a new and improved bham.fm. The changeover is happening behind the scenes right now and will be celebrated with music and fun (how else?) at Speakeasy 1920 tomorrow evening. We’d tell you more, but it makes more sense to check out the announcement for yourselves.

We’ll have an update on Timetable come Monday morning.

Birmingham Times site gets redesigned

It was bound to happen… The South’s largest Black newspaper (Birmingham-based) has updated their website and we think it looks pretty good. Here’s the link to the new Birmingham Times site – go check it out and share your thoughts.
