City Stages unveils online schedule, new acts

We haven’t done much digging through City Stages‘ new online calendar – yet – but considering that they’re using sched.org to maintain it, it is bound to be a useful tool for folks planning to attend this year’s edition of the music festival held in Birmingham’s city center. You’ll be able to send the schedule to your phone, subscribe to a calendar ICS feed and even merge schedules so you know where your friends are headed.

They’ve also added a new act to the lineup – local favorite Wild Sweet Orange will now be gracing The Discovery Stage on Friday evening, June 19 starting at 9 p.m., serving at the opening act for Plain White T’s. There’s no mention of the headliner’s appearance on their site, but it wouldn’t be a surprise either…

Jane’s Addiction is not included in the listings, nor is their performance listed on their upcoming tour dates. There is word though that Perry Farrell injured (actually tore) his calf muscle Sunday while performing in Atlanta’s Lakewood Amphitheatre. He’s still planning on performing tonight in Austin, TX.

got plans 2.0 | 4.10-4.12

Easter Egg. Svadilfari/FlickrI guess you could call this the Easter edition of got plans; that is if the Terminal did holiday editions of weekly posts, which I don’t think it does. To be honest I almost didn’t write one for this weekend with it being Easter and all.

A part of me figured that the most important thing our beleaguered post-modern generation could do this weekend would be finding our way to a church. Realizing that I wasn’t overburdened with guilt from my transgressions (but rather tormented by the hopes and expectations of the future), I came to my senses and felt that those who read my post might be carrying the same cross. Thus, I decided that like me others need the distraction that comes from a pre-packaged Terminal-approved Birmingham weekend.

The fun starts after the jump… Continue reading

got plans 2.0 | 4.3 – 4.5

The Alys Stephens Center’s Starlight Gala is this weekend, but who can afford to go to that.  I know I can’t and if I were to venture a guess I’d say that you couldn’t either.  So what are the recently economically disillusioned masses to do while the urban haute bourgeoisie of Birmingham sip cocktails on the campus of UAB.  It’s simple really, just read the rest of this post and realize that you aren’t living in a one-show town.

got plans 2.0 | 3.20-3.22

If you hadn’t noticed, we’re riding high here at The Terminal about our future workspace. I’d like to hear you guys mirror that excitement by getting pumped about what’s going on in town this weekend. Check out these noteworthy events and don’t be shy about letting the rest of us know what you plan on doing.

If you haven’t heard about Opera Birmingham’s presentation of Verdi’s La Traviata you’ve officially been living in a hole. This highly publicized performance, starring Alabama native Susanna Phillips, in her very first Violetta, and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra” happens tonight and Sunday. This evening the performance begins at 7:30 and Sunday’s matinee begins at 2:30. The tickets range from $15-78 depending on your preference, but I’m sure it will sound beautiful from any seat in the Alabama Theater.

Saturday evening the Alys Stephens Center will be presenting the amazing Spanish Harlem Orchestra. This show starts at 8 but if you’re up for some salsa dancing you can enjoy a free lesson before the show. Students shouldn’t miss this one, because it’s definitely a deal at $20, as for the rest of you don’t let the sorry economy keep you from enjoying an awesome show. Non-student prices range from $25-45.

Coldplay tickets go on sale March 16

Every once in a while I become so excited about using Twitter to share news that I’ve learned about that I forget that there are many of our readers who still don’t use the service. So here’s the 411: The Birmingham News is reporting that Coldplay has announced a May 18 concert atthe state’s largest outdoor music venue, the Verizon Wireless Music Center at Oak Mountain. Tickets will go on sale next Monday morning at 10 a.m. via this link and LiveNation’s toll-free number. According to their website, it will be the band’s first show in The Magic City since January 2003.

Got Plans 2.0 – 2.27-3.1

For those of you who are Terminal regulars, I like to think that you were all teary-eyed back in October when Christina wrote her last Got plans? post.  Without it how else were you going to know what to do for the weekend?

I don’t know if you were able to realize it, but what The Terminal laid out in that weekly post was the power to one up those who waste time late Friday afternoon searching the web or flipping through various weekly-published event calendars searching for something to do.  Well, after a justified hiatus, today marks the return of got plans.  With a new style and new direction I set out to be the genius behind your weekend.  As the new writer, let me do all the work.  I’ll flip through the pages and click the links, from there I’ll suggest three or four Terminal-worthy events.  If anything it’ll just be the things you shouldn’t be missing.

On the flip side, I don’t have the swagger to claim that I’m writing a definitive weekend guide, so if I leave something out, make a comment and let the rest of us know what’s up.  Above all, when someone asks how you know about all this cool stuff, give The Terminal some credit and we’ll keep this conversation going…

Urban Fabric playlist, 2.14.2009

I may be a little biased, but I’m thinking one of the best ways to get into an even better mood on this beautiful (alebit cold) President’s Day is to press play and listen to this week’s Heavyweight selection (Hour 2) from Urban Fabric with Ken Webb.

While you’re at it, check out the playlist from Saturday night after the jump.

Heartless Bastards climb The Mountain

The Heartless Bastards have indeed been climbing towards the mountaintop recently. Their new album, The Mountain, debuted last week.

heartless-bastardsThe Cincinnati, OH-based garage rock band made their debut on Letterman earlier this week (Tuesday actually) and now they’re getting ready to take the stage at The Bottletree this evening in a show that includes performances by Nashville’s The Deep Vibration. Tickets are $10 and it starts at 8 p.m. I’d say that they’re staying pretty busy indeed.

If you missed their performance of Out at Sea, check it out; If you’ve been wondering about if you wanted to go… take a listen to the title track:

Roomful of Ghosts is hauntingly good

Samm BennettI’ll admit I was a little nervous to restart the Timetable video of the week last week, especially since I wasn’t quite sure how to follow up Vulture Whale’s effort. Enter my friend John, who forwarded me some information about the new release from Birmingham expatriate Samm Bennett, entitled Roomful of Ghosts. This week’s video is Until You Kiss Me, and I think that those of you that are fans of  world music will enjoy the music of this founding member of the free improvisation group Third Person‘s latest effort. But I think that Mark Dery’s review of the album will do a much better job of painting the appropriate picture…
