got plans 2.0 | 6.12 – 6.14

Come on people, support the arts! Make your way to Naked Art Gallery this evening from 5-9 p.m. for the opening reception of Rock Paper Scissors.  This show features sculpted creations by artists Justin Roth and Tiffany Ownby.  Both will be present this evening as well as tomorrow for the tea time reception from 1-6 p.m. By the way, there’s going to be fresh baked cookies…

If you’re at Naked Art you might as well stop by Silvertron Cafe and take advantage of their weekend specials. You won’t be disappointed.

Tomorrow night you’re going to miss something special if you sit at home during Paint the Town Red.  The American Red Cross presents Birmingham’s first digital art show in downtown’s loft district. The storefronts along 2nd Avenue North will come alive with digital media creations from 6-11 p.m. Tickets are $12.

If you’re achin’ for a show, checkout the calendar over at bham.fm and remember, unless it storms there’s going to be a kickball game Sunday at Crestwood Park followed by the Rojo after party.  Get the details at @gokickball.

What else do you have to share?

If you haven’t had a chance to celebrate since the hops got freed, the Magic City Brewfest is where you need to be this weekend. That is if you can get a ticket. From looks of things on their website the inebriated masses have already bought up most of the tickets, but if you rush over to Sloss this morning you may be able to get a couple of the 100 beer tickets they’re selling.

Are you a country music fan? Forget Nashville this weekend, road trip it down to Enterprise, AL for BamaJam. Taylor Swift and just about every other country star is there this weekend. Things kicked off last night but I’m sure the best is coming tonight and tomorrow.

Celebrate at Vulcan’s 105th Birthday Bash Sunday. Tickets are pretty cheap for this afternoon of family fun.

Also on Sunday, the Alabama Theatre is hosting an open house which includes a tour of the Lyric Theatre.  The tour is free but a donation towards the renovation of the Lyric would be greatly appreciated. The Alabama’s summer film series starts this weekend as well with screenings of Pinocchio and the sing-along version of Mamma Mia .

If you’ve got plans of your own be sure to fill the rest of in…

got plans 2.0 | 5.22 – 5.24

I was somewhat hard pressed to find events for this weekend. Luckily, it looks like I won’t go wrong with tonight’s Alabama Symphony Orchestra performance in Caldwell Park as the headliner for the weekend. As the opening night of the ASO’s Sounds of Summer event series, they’re mixing it up with Charlie Daniels Band. That’s going to be quite the show, can you imagine “Devil Went Down to Georgia” backed up by an orchestra. Maybe it’ll be kinda like this… just maybe, but probably not.

I digress… That’s not the only show tonight; if you hurry you may still be able to get one of the extra tickets to the sold out Brandi Carlile show at WorkPlay, which starts at 9, but if not head over to Speakeasy and stay up late for the American Aquarium show.

Find your way to Bottletree tomorrow to see ISIS and Pelican, and support local jazz legend Cleve Eaton at his Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame benefit on Sunday.

What else are you doing this holiday weekend?

got plans 2.0 | 5.15 – 5.17

It’s Do Dah Day weekend! If your reading this your essentially obligating yourself to take part in the festivities which begin tonight with a Do Dah Eve party at Nana Funks in Lakeview. Don’t enjoy yourself too much though because tomorrow’s festivities kick off with the pet parade at 11ish. From there the music will be going strong throughout the weekend. Check out the schedule here.

If I’m counting right Birmingham has offered up three consecutive weekends of art events. Sunday’s Arty Party (the BAO’s annual fundraiser) at the B&A Warehouse looks to be an excellent event for local connoisseurs, with over 200 pieces being auctioned throughout the evening. Tickets are $50.

Be sure to head over to Pepper Place tomorrow morning between 7 a.m. and noon for the first day of the farmer’s market. Don’t fret too much if you miss it though, it’ll be going strong every Saturday through October. André’s got some additional information about it on the Newsstand.

As for the rest of what’s going on (Where are the Shows!!!) I’m going to try something different this weekend. Be sure to keep an eye on my twitter profile, @J_Don, and the comments to this post as I’m going to suggest things to do throughout the weekend. Whether it’s what bar to check out Saturday night, which restaurant you should consider for Sunday brunch, a show or two, or even a friendly kickball game, I’ll be filling in the details.

Remember if you’ve read this your obligated to go to Do Dah Day!

Palahniuk wrote that, “…the only reason why we ask other people how their weekend was is so we can tell them about our own weekend.” That’s not necessarily true. If you set out on this weekend’s got plans adventure your going to be so giddy come Monday your going to be telling strangers on the street about your weekend because… well, because it’s just going to be that good.

Easter Egg. Svadilfari/FlickrI guess you could call this the Easter edition of got plans; that is if the Terminal did holiday editions of weekly posts, which I don’t think it does. To be honest I almost didn’t write one for this weekend with it being Easter and all.

A part of me figured that the most important thing our beleaguered post-modern generation could do this weekend would be finding our way to a church. Realizing that I wasn’t overburdened with guilt from my transgressions (but rather tormented by the hopes and expectations of the future), I came to my senses and felt that those who read my post might be carrying the same cross. Thus, I decided that like me others need the distraction that comes from a pre-packaged Terminal-approved Birmingham weekend.

The fun starts after the jump… Continue reading

got plans 2.0 – 3.6-3.8

Without a doubt spring has blown in with the breeze and I recommend you head over to Rojo for Happy Hour after work today to kick it off El Mariachi style with $2.25 domestics, $3.00 imports, and $7.25 PBR pitchers. Once you find yourself slightly inebriated and filled to the max with your choice of Latin or American cuisine, I know the comic nerd in you is going to guide you to the nearest theatre to see Watchmen, but I wouldn’t miss the Ben Kweller show at Workplay. Tonight is the night for this sort of revelry because tomorrow and Sunday are to be spent outdoors, per my orders (I was pre-med, so I know what’s best for your health).

Got Plans 2.0 – 2.27-3.1

For those of you who are Terminal regulars, I like to think that you were all teary-eyed back in October when Christina wrote her last Got plans? post.  Without it how else were you going to know what to do for the weekend?

I don’t know if you were able to realize it, but what The Terminal laid out in that weekly post was the power to one up those who waste time late Friday afternoon searching the web or flipping through various weekly-published event calendars searching for something to do.  Well, after a justified hiatus, today marks the return of got plans.  With a new style and new direction I set out to be the genius behind your weekend.  As the new writer, let me do all the work.  I’ll flip through the pages and click the links, from there I’ll suggest three or four Terminal-worthy events.  If anything it’ll just be the things you shouldn’t be missing.

On the flip side, I don’t have the swagger to claim that I’m writing a definitive weekend guide, so if I leave something out, make a comment and let the rest of us know what’s up.  Above all, when someone asks how you know about all this cool stuff, give The Terminal some credit and we’ll keep this conversation going…

Got plans this weekend? 10.17 – 10.19

Okay, here’s what I’m either doing or would like to be doing this weekend. Other ideas? Put them in the comment section. I love comments and I’m nosy so I love to know your plans too.

Now that gas is cheaper, driving to Tuscaloosa/Northport for an art show doesn’t seem that crazy of an idea. And with the money you save on gas, you can buy something cool to hang on the wall. Better investment than the stock market right now. The 37th Annual Kentuck Festival of the Arts is Saturday and Sunday, 9 to 5 both days. Daily tickets are $10, under 12 free. I went last year for the first time and really enjoyed the selection of works and the music. Fair warning, the food is a little pricey and you’ll want to get in line early.

Got plans this weekend? 9.26 – 9.28

While the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival is the big deal this weekend, there are some other options. Really! Would I lie to you? Never … at least not intentionally .. well, maybe if you ask “do I look fat in this?”

Did you hear the news that the Alabama State Fair moved from the Fairgrounds to Pelham and the former Oak Mountain Amphitheatre*? Afraid you already missed all the rides and cotton candy and pig races? Not to fear, the fair is open until Sunday. Now it’s not cheap — tickets are $8, wristbands for the rides are $20 (but hey, every day is wristband day) and then add on another $5 for parking. But the fair only comes once a year and where else are you going to buy overpriced caramel apples? Go ahead and buy two, I’m not judging. And you look great in those jeans. Pass me the funnel cake.
