ONB Magic City Art Connection this weekend!

mccThis year the ONB Magic City Art Connection (MCAC) is celebrating 26 years. It will take place April 24 – 26 at Linn Park in downtown Birmingham, going from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. each day.

For those not familiar with MCAC, it is a free contemporary art festival that will showcase more than 200 exhibiting artists, children’s art activities, music, food and other great events.

If you join their Facebook group you can find out about their Twitter contest, where they are giving away tickets for their prestigious Corks and Chefs food and wine tasting event that will be held during the festival (a $30 value).

Get into downtown and check out lots of great art this weekend!

got plans 2.0 | 4.10-4.12

Easter Egg. Svadilfari/FlickrI guess you could call this the Easter edition of got plans; that is if the Terminal did holiday editions of weekly posts, which I don’t think it does. To be honest I almost didn’t write one for this weekend with it being Easter and all.

A part of me figured that the most important thing our beleaguered post-modern generation could do this weekend would be finding our way to a church. Realizing that I wasn’t overburdened with guilt from my transgressions (but rather tormented by the hopes and expectations of the future), I came to my senses and felt that those who read my post might be carrying the same cross. Thus, I decided that like me others need the distraction that comes from a pre-packaged Terminal-approved Birmingham weekend.

The fun starts after the jump… Continue reading

Got Plans 2.0 – 2.27-3.1

For those of you who are Terminal regulars, I like to think that you were all teary-eyed back in October when Christina wrote her last Got plans? post.  Without it how else were you going to know what to do for the weekend?

I don’t know if you were able to realize it, but what The Terminal laid out in that weekly post was the power to one up those who waste time late Friday afternoon searching the web or flipping through various weekly-published event calendars searching for something to do.  Well, after a justified hiatus, today marks the return of got plans.  With a new style and new direction I set out to be the genius behind your weekend.  As the new writer, let me do all the work.  I’ll flip through the pages and click the links, from there I’ll suggest three or four Terminal-worthy events.  If anything it’ll just be the things you shouldn’t be missing.

On the flip side, I don’t have the swagger to claim that I’m writing a definitive weekend guide, so if I leave something out, make a comment and let the rest of us know what’s up.  Above all, when someone asks how you know about all this cool stuff, give The Terminal some credit and we’ll keep this conversation going…

Alabama’s invading HGTV’s That’s Clever

After learning about Charles’ appearance on HGTV’s That’s Clever tomorrow morning, we figured that it would be nice to see if there were any other local or regional artists (or ones with a connection to the area) that were going to make the cut and be able to appear in the coming weeks. Well, here’s a list, courtesy of Mr. Buchanan himself:

Date Artist
January 15 Kristin Mathis
January 23 Kristen Farmer Hall
January 26 Joyce Vance
January 27 Charles Buchanan
February 2 David Hammock (Arab)
February 6 Cindy Cail (West Blocton)
February 9 Amy Lucas McClure
February 11 Mike Hawkins

It sounds as though he’ll be sharing more information on his blog as he gets it about other artists making appearances (plus if you’ve already missed the artist’s premiere, it just means you’ve got a reason to check out repeats)!

Got plans this weekend? 9.26 – 9.28

While the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival is the big deal this weekend, there are some other options. Really! Would I lie to you? Never … at least not intentionally .. well, maybe if you ask “do I look fat in this?”

Did you hear the news that the Alabama State Fair moved from the Fairgrounds to Pelham and the former Oak Mountain Amphitheatre*? Afraid you already missed all the rides and cotton candy and pig races? Not to fear, the fair is open until Sunday. Now it’s not cheap — tickets are $8, wristbands for the rides are $20 (but hey, every day is wristband day) and then add on another $5 for parking. But the fair only comes once a year and where else are you going to buy overpriced caramel apples? Go ahead and buy two, I’m not judging. And you look great in those jeans. Pass me the funnel cake.

Meet the Art Before ArtWalk

Photo: Checking out the art at last week’s Artwalk Preamble held at Rojo. Andrea Walker

For seven years, Birmingham has hosted ArtWalk, a juried art show that features all types of artwork on display for the public to enjoy and purchase. Each year, Artwalk organizers have held a Artwalk preamble fundraiser, to raise money for the event. However, this year organizers tried something different. Instead of just one night where donated art is showcased, it’s been broken down into four separate nights during the month of August. On each night, a different type of medium is on display. For instance, on this Thursday night at Rojo, participating artists contributed their photography.

In Love With: Magic City Art Connection

For me springtime in Birmingham means beautiful weather, colorful flowers, and Magic City Art Connection. Even before I dabbled in art, I enjoyed wandering among the artists, soaking in all the creativity in the air (floating alongside the intoxicating scent of funnel cakes). In fact, it was at a Magic City Art Connection that I rediscovered block printmaking and got inspired to explore it again.

The 25th edition of the city’s biggest art festival is this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Linn Park downtown. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, it’s free, and it’s a vibrant event you really shouldn’t skip. More than 200 artists from around the city, state, and country will be scattered throughout the park, showing the magic they’ve made using paint, watercolor, pencils, ink, wood, fiber, metal, and who knows what else. You don’t have to buy anything, but I guarantee you’ll see something you’ll like—and perhaps something to spark your own artistic ideas.

Got plans this weekend? 2.8 – 2.10

You may think you have plenty of time but all that red, white and pink at the stores says Valentine’s Day is just around the weekend. NOW is the time to be making reservations, ordering flowers and yes, buying that something special for your sweetie. Don’t be that guy or girl that begs as the doors are closing for a few minutes to frantically look at the picked-over card selection at the local Hallmark. I’ve seen that desperation and while we gladly let the registers ring well pass closing, I couldn’t help but think “wouldn’t you rather be home with the one you love instead of at a strip mall at 9?” A little planning NOW will get you home before dinner, and the shoulder that helped cook it, is cold.
