got plans 2.0 | 6.5 – 6.7.2009

If you haven’t had a chance to celebrate since the hops got freed, the Magic City Brewfest is where you need to be this weekend. That is if you can get a ticket. From looks of things on their website the inebriated masses have already bought up most of the tickets, but if you rush over to Sloss this morning you may be able to get a couple of the 100 beer tickets they’re selling.

Are you a country music fan? Forget Nashville this weekend, road trip it down to Enterprise, AL for BamaJam. Taylor Swift and just about every other country star is there this weekend. Things kicked off last night but I’m sure the best is coming tonight and tomorrow.

Celebrate at Vulcan’s 105th Birthday Bash Sunday. Tickets are pretty cheap for this afternoon of family fun.

Also on Sunday, the Alabama Theatre is hosting an open house which includes a tour of the Lyric Theatre.  The tour is free but a donation towards the renovation of the Lyric would be greatly appreciated. The Alabama’s summer film series starts this weekend as well with screenings of Pinocchio and the sing-along version of Mamma Mia .

Got plans this weekend? 10.24 – 10.26

Sure today is all dreary and rainy, but Saturday and Sunday look nice with crisp fall temperatures to put a rosy glow in your cheeks. So bundle up, don’t forget the kids, and head outside.

First up on Saturday, the 6th annual Art in Avondale Park festival. Art activities for the kids, jazz on the stage, arts and craft vendors. The festival kicks off with a children’s parade at 10, wraps up at 4. New this year is the music. Since this is down the street from me, we’ll definitely be there. Free admission.

Next, there are harvest celebrations at both botanical gardens Saturday — Aldridge and Birmingham. I’ll take them in alphabetical order. Aldridge promises “folk artists, food vendors, pumpkin painting, face painting, John Scalici’s drum circle, magician Michael Baker and pop/rock group Vasa.” Kids should wear their costumes for the contest and parade. Free admission, hours 9 to 1. Moving on, the BBG is hosting their first Great Pumpkin festival from 10 to 2, also free admission. Here’s what they offer: “cotton candy, scavenger hunt, and a showing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” Jones Valley Farm will display a giant pumpkin with a celebrity pumpkin carver! Specialty children’s menu provided by Kathy G, costume contest with prizes. Artists and various vendors will be there displaying their work.” Both guaranteed to give my boy a good naptime.

Got plans this weekend? 5.30 – 6.1

Why of course you do. There is so much happening in the Magic City this weekend. Well, that’s if you like beer, crawfish, music and/or our naked statue guy. If you don’t like any of those, you’re out of luck.

Last week I told you about outdoor concerts featuring the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. They’re at it again this weekend, first at Caldwell Park Friday night at 8 then Saturday night same time at Fort McClellan’s Longleaf Park. This weekend’s theme is fit for a movie buff as the symphony performs selections from the Harry Potter movies, Spiderman and more. I’m not typing all the details again, so go read last weekend’s column. Then come right back.
