Got plans this weekend? 5.9 – 5.11

Friday night is the first Spoken Word Night at the new Greencup Books. I don’t think they care what you say as long as you’re willing to get up and say what you got to say. And I love the rules — “No judges, no grudges, just love and rockets.” Sign up starts at 7. FREE to listen and FREE to speak though they would appreciate donations for the drinks. The bookstore is located at 105 Richard Arrington Blvd. South.

Editor’s Note: Don‘t forget to check out Trav’s piece on the bookstore’s opening weekend from February…

You can also Come Out and Play Game Shows Friday night at 7. Release your inner Trebek, hone your rock, paper, scissors strategy and in general, have a good time and maybe win prizes. This FREE fun has a new location — Magic City Motor Scooters, 1305 2nd Ave. North, downtown Birmingham.

Celebrate Hoover Day has been moved to Sunday. But that means you can go to the Noble Street Festival in Anniston instead on Saturday. This festival seems to revolve around watching people go really fast on bikes, bicycles that is. When we say fast, we’re talking 40 mph. That’s scary fast. But the festival does have more to offer. There’s food from area restaurants, a whole day of music, kids’ activities including the McWane Science Center KidZone and more. The music is free and most of the kids’ stuff is too. You’ll have to buy tickets for the food. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The website does say rain or shine so take the umbrellas.

Celebrate Hoover Day? We Love Homewood Day? How do you choose? More after the jump…

This is another great weekend for local bands. I’ve never picked a show at Speakeasy before, but they’ve got a great one this weekend for y’all, and that ain’t the half of it:

I’ve been waiting for this one for a while folks. This weekend heralds the arrival of the coolest local music festival to date. It’s got so many of my favorite musical hamsters rocking over the course of two days that I’m salivating right now. We still have to make it through Thursday though! Here’s what you have to look forward to:

Actually… there’s not much to read this weekend. Charles has done most of the work for me (Thanks Charles!) by giving you the scoop on the 25th annual Magic City Art Connection in this week’s In Love With column. I’m in love with this art show too and I always find fabulous stuff for me and my walls to wear. The FREE festival is Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

Here’s my tip: Go without the kids Friday on your lunch break or skip out of work early. Then, take the kids Saturday or Sunday to the creative zone set aside just for them. That way, you get to see the art without meltdowns and the kids have a fun day outdoors with their favorite person in the world, you. Win-win, funnel cakes for everyone.

If the art is for sale downtown in Linn Park, then everything else will be for sale at the old Century Plaza Belk. That’s the site of this year’s annual Bargain Carousel. One word for you: Huge. People stand in line for this giant of a garage sale put on by the lovely Junior League ladies to support their good works. Hours are Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. If you want to get the best deals early, you’ll have to pay $5 to get in Saturday until noon. After that, it’s FREE.

This weekend it’s all about being green — 100% politically correct, counting up your carbon footprint, not just for hippies anymore GREEN. And the best way to save Mother Earth is to get the younger generation on board. In that effort, there are three (Yes, THREE) Earth Day events this weekend with the little kiddos in mind. And I promised you festivals, there’s a couple of them too. Read on and promise to plant a tree.

This weekend isn’t nearly as star studded as the last one, but it’s no slouch. It starts off mellow, but by Saturday it’s getting ready to kick you in the teeth (in a good way). We’ve got to warm up to that, and we’ll do so with a few sing-writers. (I’m coining this shortening of singer/songwriter as of right…now!) Enough silliness. Music time:

My favorite thing about this weeks picks is that I’ve discovered yet another local band that I was previously unaware of. This weekend is also jam-packed with big name tickets, some of which may be very difficult to come by. I’ve provided alternatives that are definitely worth checking out. Curious yet? Away we go:

I love April and September. Cooler temperatures (sometimes, maybe not this week) means lots and lots of festivals. Big, small — I love ’em all.

This Friday and Saturday is the 10th Annual Lebanese Food and Cultural Festival at St. Elias Maronite Church, 836 8th St. South. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Good food, dancing, tours of the church, did I mention the food? Follow the link to see this year’s menu. In case you’re at work, I’ll warn you that the festival website plays traditional music … but that just puts me in the mood to go hear the real thing by the band coming in from NYC. The fest is FREE but the food is not.

April showers bring May flowers … that’s if you stock up at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens big sale. Big is an understatement. This is the largest plant sale in Alabama history! Lots to choose from, good prices and all proceeds go to the Gardens. I myself want to do everything possible to support the Gardens and keep the admission free. It will break my heart if they ever start charging. To attend the sale is free too and the hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Happy planting!
