Get your Zine on this weekend at GreenCup

The Greencup Book, Zine, Music and Arts Fair gets birthed this weekend, November 14 & 15, courtesy of Greencup Books, Bare Hands Gallery and THE2NDHAND. It will be a one-stop shop for folks to find local and regional writers, lit magazines, small presses, comic artists, area record labels and bands, zine makers and handmade book artists. The fun takes place on Southside (directions). There will be info tables telling you about the local zines and music sources as well as readings from area authors and of course, music. Friday night’s welcome party/meet & greet will include a reading courtesy of THE2NDHAND. Saturday’s events include an after party at Greencup Books.

Got Plans this weekend? 7.4 – 7.6

We don’t take holidays here at The Terminal. Well, okay we do but first I’ll fill you in on this weekend’s highlights.

There’s really just one highlight for me and it will be lighting up the sky Friday night. Thunder on the Mountain is a rather cheesy name for a fireworks show but I’m all about cheese and it’s a great display. I have my own secret spot for viewing and I’m not sharing. But I will tell you that UAB is offering a nice spot and music too. The UAB Summer Band will play a free concert at 8 p.m., filled with patriotic tunes, on the lawn of Bartow Arena, 617 13th St. South. Bring your lawn chairs, the little ones, blankets and picnic baskets. The fireworks start at 9 p.m. If you don’t want to get caught in traffic, stay home and watch the live broadcast on Fox 6. And don’t forget to tune your radio to The New 94.5 FM and Rock 99.5 FM for music to go with the purty lights.

Got plans this weekend? 5.9 – 5.11

Friday night is the first Spoken Word Night at the new Greencup Books. I don’t think they care what you say as long as you’re willing to get up and say what you got to say. And I love the rules — “No judges, no grudges, just love and rockets.” Sign up starts at 7. FREE to listen and FREE to speak though they would appreciate donations for the drinks. The bookstore is located at 105 Richard Arrington Blvd. South.

Editor’s Note: Don‘t forget to check out Trav’s piece on the bookstore’s opening weekend from February…

You can also Come Out and Play Game Shows Friday night at 7. Release your inner Trebek, hone your rock, paper, scissors strategy and in general, have a good time and maybe win prizes. This FREE fun has a new location — Magic City Motor Scooters, 1305 2nd Ave. North, downtown Birmingham.

Greencup Books opens tomorrow

This Friday, February 8th, at 2 p.m., Birmingham’s newest used bookstore opens its doors to the public. This grand-opening of Greencup Books, located in an old two-story brick building at 105 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd., South (next to Bare Hands Gallery), includes a kick-off event featuring a signing with Tony Crunk and artist Peter Wilm, who will be there at 7 p.m. to promote their book project Stories from Real Life, which is Greencup Books first publishing project.

Owner and publisher Russell Helms says opening a business that published books and art, as well as sell it, is something that he hopes will spur new ideas within the revitalized Southside area.

“It’s all about building community and supporting creativity “at any cost”, says Helms. “If you need a creative boost, just spending half an hour with us should do the trick. Ideas and original thoughts are guaranteed. We have books, books, books, and lots of cool art from Bare Hands Gallery. We exist to spur creativity. People can expect whatever they are looking for, and more!”
