280’s new thriving Black Market

Last night was the preview party for George Cowgill‘s Black Market Bar. It’s located in the Colonnade on Highway 280 and will cater to the same awesome crowd as its downtown counterpart, Speakeasy.

It’s expected to be open to the public later this month. Friend them on MySpace to keep up with the bar’s updates and to show your support.

Speakeasy deals in the Black Market

The lede’s up on the front page; I’ll wait while you go check it out…

OK, I sat down and talked with George about a great upcoming development.

WHITNEY: Give us a quick description of what’s happening in Georgeland lately.
GEORGE: The Black Market Bar (BMB) is located at the Colonnade on Highway 280. It is somewhere you would find in the pages of a graphic novel or on screen in a detective noir film. The walls are dark with mood colors and low lighting. The staff is friendly, hip and well-versed on signature drinks, beer and wine. Coffee drinks too. The food menu is to the point and original. Our hours of operation are 4 pm to 5 am. (closed on Sundays & Mondays) The BMB is non-smoking, thankfully, BUT has a huge covered patio that is available for cancer causing habits. My theory is… If you go out late, then you want to go somewhere nice…

W: How did this idea for a new Birmingham bar come about? Was it a long time in the making?
G: I came up with the concept back in the fall of 2007. Since I opened the Speakeasy in ’06 I knew I wasn’t going to sit still with just one bar. I like the idea of a different location to try new things without betraying the atmosphere people are accustomed to at the Speakeasy. Black Market Bar + Speakeasy + Firefighting = no sleep, but thats ok. Continue reading

Time to wine down

It’s been tough, I know. A full work week coming off a 3-day- holiday weekend can be exhausting. After catching up on emails and voicemails, it’s time for cocktails. (Ok, sorry. I promise to never rhyme again).

So, in honor of hump day – or as some call it – Wine Down Wednesday, let’s turn our attention to a few IN drinking spots that made the cut: The J. Clyde, Metro Bistro, and The Wine Loft.

Back on the horse and better than ever, that’s me. How’s your dead end? At least music can lift you up from the gutter for an instant or two and give you a glimpse of the golden. Here’s your fix for the short term:

This is another great weekend for local bands. I’ve never picked a show at Speakeasy before, but they’ve got a great one this weekend for y’all, and that ain’t the half of it:

This weekend isn’t nearly as star studded as the last one, but it’s no slouch. It starts off mellow, but by Saturday it’s getting ready to kick you in the teeth (in a good way). We’ve got to warm up to that, and we’ll do so with a few sing-writers. (I’m coining this shortening of singer/songwriter as of right…now!) Enough silliness. Music time:

My favorite thing about this weeks picks is that I’ve discovered yet another local band that I was previously unaware of. This weekend is also jam-packed with big name tickets, some of which may be very difficult to come by. I’ve provided alternatives that are definitely worth checking out. Curious yet? Away we go:

Now that Easter is over, there’s a long stretch with no Major Holidays. Don’t worry about it! Just shorten your horizon a little. Look to the weekend, and the many delights it holds:

Another weekend is upon us. I can almost hear the collective sighs of the populace as they prepare to vent their pent-up frustrations into the atmosphere. What better way to facilitate said release than to head to one of the following shows. Music: It’s good for what ails ya. Take one, and call me on Monday.

First off, it would be wrong of me not to mention ShamRock, the extravaganzafest happening at Sloss on Saturday in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. I know it’s been covered elsewhere on the site, so I’ll leave it at that. There’s a lot of chaff in the line-up, but you should check out The Bridges. They’ve got some interesting stuff going on. Now, onto the picks:
