Got Plans 2.0 – 2.27-3.1

For those of you who are Terminal regulars, I like to think that you were all teary-eyed back in October when Christina wrote her last Got plans? post.  Without it how else were you going to know what to do for the weekend?

I don’t know if you were able to realize it, but what The Terminal laid out in that weekly post was the power to one up those who waste time late Friday afternoon searching the web or flipping through various weekly-published event calendars searching for something to do.  Well, after a justified hiatus, today marks the return of got plans.  With a new style and new direction I set out to be the genius behind your weekend.  As the new writer, let me do all the work.  I’ll flip through the pages and click the links, from there I’ll suggest three or four Terminal-worthy events.  If anything it’ll just be the things you shouldn’t be missing.

On the flip side, I don’t have the swagger to claim that I’m writing a definitive weekend guide, so if I leave something out, make a comment and let the rest of us know what’s up.  Above all, when someone asks how you know about all this cool stuff, give The Terminal some credit and we’ll keep this conversation going…

mmm…beer at okafés!…mmm…

okafesbeerThere are been some new additions to the menu at okafés! recently. The coffee house located in Birmingham’s Pepper Place has recently been granted its beer and wine license and already has rather large selections available for both categories. So now there’s yet another reason for folks to head on over there for shows in the coming weeks…

The beer selection pictured here made its appearance late last week, with the wine list following during the weekend.

Urban Fabric playlist, 2.14.2009

I may be a little biased, but I’m thinking one of the best ways to get into an even better mood on this beautiful (alebit cold) President’s Day is to press play and listen to this week’s Heavyweight selection (Hour 2) from Urban Fabric with Ken Webb.

While you’re at it, check out the playlist from Saturday night after the jump.

Heartless Bastards climb The Mountain

The Heartless Bastards have indeed been climbing towards the mountaintop recently. Their new album, The Mountain, debuted last week.

heartless-bastardsThe Cincinnati, OH-based garage rock band made their debut on Letterman earlier this week (Tuesday actually) and now they’re getting ready to take the stage at The Bottletree this evening in a show that includes performances by Nashville’s The Deep Vibration. Tickets are $10 and it starts at 8 p.m. I’d say that they’re staying pretty busy indeed.

If you missed their performance of Out at Sea, check it out; If you’ve been wondering about if you wanted to go… take a listen to the title track:

Roomful of Ghosts is hauntingly good

Samm BennettI’ll admit I was a little nervous to restart the Timetable video of the week last week, especially since I wasn’t quite sure how to follow up Vulture Whale’s effort. Enter my friend John, who forwarded me some information about the new release from Birmingham expatriate Samm Bennett, entitled Roomful of Ghosts. This week’s video is Until You Kiss Me, and I think that those of you that are fans of  world music will enjoy the music of this founding member of the free improvisation group Third Person‘s latest effort. But I think that Mark Dery’s review of the album will do a much better job of painting the appropriate picture…

Welcome Frigid Records

A new record store in Birmingham

Frigid Records at Magic City Motor Scooters – acnatta/Flickr

The independent music store scene gained a new entrant officially last weekend. Frigid Records set up their first physical location inside of Magic City Motor Scooters last week. Owners Ryan and Erin James plan to be there on Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. to sell new and used vinyl and CDs. They also plan to take the store to local music events.

According to their entry on Bhamwiki, they plan to eventually open their own storefront.

Vulture Whale’s latest efforts drops… TODAY!

If you hadn’t heard yet, one of the best bands in Birmingham, Vulture Whale, has dropped their new CD today. They’ve been great friends to this site, going so far as to perform at our first ever Terminal Concert last summer, something that we will forever be thankful for. We hope that you’ll show them and local label Skybucket Records some love in the coming days by checking out the effort.

Tomorrow we’ll turn on the link to purchase this piece online, but we thought we’d take an opportunity to encourage you to take a trip to one of our local record stores so you could show them some love. So don’t forget that you can pick up the new effort, Vulture Whale, at local record stores like Renaissance Records and Charlemagne Record Exchange, both in Five Points South. If you need some more convincing, you can either download the track Sugar at their website, play the video for the song in our sidebar as the “video of the week” returns to Timetable or press the play button below and check out another track from the release, Tote it to Cleveland, AL.

Enjoy!

BTW: Their CD release party is scheduled for Valentine’s Day (2.14.2009), starting at 9 p.m. Check it out!
