He looks so much taller…

Looking up at Vulcan. acnatta/FlickrWell, apparently Vulcan is tall and old (he just celebrated his 104th); he’s just not the tallest statue in the South. That honor goes to The Golden Driller in Tulsa, OK. The Big Guy atop Red Mountain does get to claim being the fifth tallest according to the list posted to Southern Living’s Tales from the Road blog yesterday.

You know, it does look like it would be a pretty cool road trip though… (see the map at the bottom of the post). Plus, you can’t beat having the tallest statue in the South also doing double duty as the namesake for a minor league baseball team

So, who won the first four passes?

We’ve got the names of the first two winners of weekend passes to City Stages 20!

Congratulations to Trey McClure and Geno Pearson! We’ll be sending you emails later today so you know where you can pick up your passes.

The entry form is still open and we’ll be announcing the winners of two more pairs of weekend passes next week Monday. If you entered last week before 5 p.m., we’re going to ask you to resubmit your entry.

We’re also going to ask that you bear with us as we’ll unveil our City Stages section on Wednesday instead of today…

Citywide WiFi still on the radar

Wifi Rest Stop - brionv/FlickrOne of the projects announced early on by Mayor Langford’s administration was the goal to have Birmingham, AL covered with wireless Internet access (making us the first major city in the United States truly able to make that claim). Now, while the metro area has several hotspots areas already (more than 343 – send in others if you see them), there’s always room for more. That’s where negotiations with Bright House Networks enter the picture, though according to this ABC 33/40 posting, it may not be exactly what the mayor was hoping for either…

There’s more beer to drink today

There are a few things going on today in Birmingham (as Christina pointed out in her column on Friday); last night some of the staff decided to check out the Magic City BrewFest at Sloss Furnaces.

Good People Beer being served at BrewFest 2008 in Bimingham, AL.

We ran into some good people, Good People and ,of course, great beer. It’s looking like the rain’s going to cooperate (at least a little) this afternoon, so we may see you out there again today. We might even try a live post. BTW – for those of you reading this and planning to attend today, check out the event website’s front page for an update on what’s going on today.

But there are plans for the weekend…

This is where we’d run the really cool lede for Christina’s weekend plans column. However, if we did that this week, the column just wouldn’t make any sense if you forwarded it on to your friends (and you are doing that aren’t you?)

Anyway, check it out over on Timetable and you’ll figure out why the Big Guy atop Red Mountain, Harry Potter and jazz can be mentioned in the same breath this week…
