Farewell, Cave9

cave9Bham.fm reported yesterday that long-time Birmingham indie music venue Cave9 had officially closed its doors over the weekend. The local music website has a list of the shows that have been moved to GreenCup Books while also providing a fond farewell for the all ages venue – in all of its forms.

If you weren’t familiar with the venue, here’s a story written for The Birmingham Buzz back in 2008 when it was still on Magnolia Avenue. There’s also the chance that more news will be available from their MySpace profile, their page on Facebook or their Twitter feed in the coming days…

UPDATE: The City Stages ’09 campaign is… you!

The campaign is centered on us – Birmingham that is.

This year’s effort to make people aware of the festival as it comes of age involves sharing what City Stages means to those that attend it. Dan Monroe of Cayenne Creative explained the concept to a full WorkPlay Theatre this evening.

Speaking of switches…

Those of you that follow the r3vrb.com and bham.fm may begin to notice that both sites are loading a little slower than normal this afternoon. If you haven’t heard yet (or haven’t visited them before) allow us to elaborate.

The sites, maintained by former Timetable music writers Sam George and Whitney Sides respectively, have decided to join forces to become a new and improved bham.fm. The changeover is happening behind the scenes right now and will be celebrated with music and fun (how else?) at Speakeasy 1920 tomorrow evening. We’d tell you more, but it makes more sense to check out the announcement for yourselves.

We’ll have an update on Timetable come Monday morning.

We Have Signal needs us!

If you haven’t seen the APT series We Have Signal… you need to check it out, like now or learn more about it by checking out this post from October. Bham.fm shared a note from series producer Matt Whitson earlier this month – a plea for help as the network’s recent budget cuts does threaten the long-term existence of this music series. One way to help is to head on over to Bottletree tonight to check out the benefit show. And you’re still here on the site because…

A Wild Sweet Orange update

For those of you who haven’t ventured to Timetable recently, the band is currently a nominee for this week’s Freshman vote on MTVu – their video for “Either/Or” is currently in 3rd place. You’ve got until noon today to help them take the stage tonight in Birmingham as the winner!

So if you missed them performing last night at The Bottletree, you might want to consider venturing over to WorkPlay this evening for their 8 p.m. performance.

The Voice of the Civil Rights Era, Odetta Gordonwill not get the chance to perform at President-elect Barack Obama’s Inauguration as she and others had hoped. The Birmingham, AL born singer/songwriter passed away last night at the age of 77, a result of heart disease according to her agent and numerous reports, including this one at nytimes.com (subscription may be required). They also have an extended Last Word interview with the folk music icon currently available on their website.

Let Odetta hear from us here in Birmingham

Last week we let you know about the current health crisis of legendary singer/songwriter (and Birmingham, AL native) Odetta Gordon.

The Daily Kos picks up the story on Saturday with a new address and word that she’s expected to remain at Lenox Hill Hospital through the end of the week. The address for those interested in sending her well wishes (or dropping by if you’re in New York for the holidays) is after the jump:
