The Voice of the Civil Rights Era, Odetta Gordonwill not get the chance to perform at President-elect Barack Obama’s Inauguration as she and others had hoped. The Birmingham, AL born singer/songwriter passed away last night at the age of 77, a result of heart disease according to her agent and numerous reports, including this one at nytimes.com (subscription may be required). They also have an extended Last Word interview with the folk music icon currently available on their website.

Last week we let you know about the current health crisis of legendary singer/songwriter (and Birmingham, AL native) Odetta Gordon.

The Daily Kos picks up the story on Saturday with a new address and word that she’s expected to remain at Lenox Hill Hospital through the end of the week. The address for those interested in sending her well wishes (or dropping by if you’re in New York for the holidays) is after the jump:

Birmingham’s “Voice of Civil Rights Movement” ill in NYC

Odetta in Birmingham. ILIGHT/FlickrSinger/songwriter Odetta is currently in critical condition at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York after suffering kidney failure according to a statement released by her manager and published on WFMU’s blog earlier today. 

The Birmingham native is still expecting to perform at President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration on January 20. Those who wish to pass along well wishes will want the hospital’s address, which follows:
