Today’s my Birmingham guest blogger: Barry Copeland

Barry Copeland - Bob Farley/f8PhotoBirmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce executive vice president Barry Copeland gave a very uplifting talk to the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce in mid-March asking people to take a look at all of the positive things taking place in Birmingham and the surrounding area.

Of course, we’re always happy with folks that take that approach to looking at things, so we decided that he would be a great person to formally begin our guest blogger series over on my Birmingham (go on, check out the post).

What we didn’t know was how much of an effect asking Barry to write would have (though we doubt we can take that much credit for it). We’re pretty happy with the result ourselves.

Want to contribute to Birmingham’s hub?

It’s time to make that quarterly request for those interested in writing posts for The Terminal to make yourselves known to us. Now that we’ve been around for a year, it’s becoming tougher and tougher for those that are still involved with the site’s day-to-day operations to keep up with all of the submissions and story ideas. It’s currently a job where the only pay is knowing that you’ve helped to make more people in the city aware of what’s going on – though we’re working on it.

Time to dream a little dream for the region

Late last week the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham introduced the Community Catalyst Fund at their annual meeting. I decided to take a moment and write about what I think it means for our region – the result is our current entry over on my Birmingham. Check it out if you’ve got a moment.

Then let us know what your biggest dream for Birmingham as you answer our current Magic City Question

UPDATE: Opinions on the state of King’s Dream

UPDATE: 4:47 p.m. André’s editorial is now available. See the link at the end of the post.

As we remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 40th observance of the date of his assassination, let’s take a moment and listen to the words of the fallen solider of the Civil Rights movement delivered the evening before he died (RealAudio file).

We’ve decided to share two editorials with you over on my Birmingham as the nation remembers the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which occurred some 40 years ago today.

Our first piece comes from our editorial assistant, Leah Walcott, currently a senior at Miles College in Fairfield, AL.

Yours truly will post his own thoughts on the occasion and what it means around 4:45 p.m. this afternoonThis post is now available over on my Birmingham.

Think about supporting the hub

Let’s get this second announcement out of the way:

The Terminal is implementing a voluntary subscription model beginning today!

Now that I’ve got your attention, I’m going to explain why we’ve decided to go in that direction and what it means to you (or you can just go directly to our new support page).

New stops on The Terminal

We did say yesterday that we’d have an announcement today on the site. We actually have two announcements to share with you. This first one is more of a confirming what those who attended our anniversary party already know. We want to make sure that you’re aware of three new initiatives that we intend to launch before the end of April (though we are aware that in one case, it may be delayed until mid-May). We think that you’ll be happy with all of these as it adds to the conversation.

Read more about the new series after the jump or just hang out and wait for the second announcement of the day (coming later this morning after 1 p.m.).

Thanks for coming out on Friday!

Terminal Party thumbnail - Chris MillerWe’d like to take a moment and thank everyone that came out to our anniversary party on Friday evening. The weather ended up playing nice and it sounds like a good time was had by all. At least, we hope so… Click on the image to the left to see photos from the event.

We’re working on uploading some audio, but I still think that Friday’s editorial says what’s needed much better. We’ll keep trying though… We’re holding off the announcement for one more day to make sure everything’s working OK.

We’ve got some folks to thank today for helping to make this event possible, so pardon us while we use this space to do so:
