The last school bells are ringing, but the pursuit of knowledge doesn’t take the summer off. Businesses and organizations throughout the metro area are offering some very cool, very fascinating classes during the vacation months — and each one is a great opportunity to try a new skill and perhaps get hooked on an entire new hobby.

In Love With: Magic City Art Connection
For me springtime in Birmingham means beautiful weather, colorful flowers, and Magic City Art Connection. Even before I dabbled in art, I enjoyed wandering among the artists, soaking in all the creativity in the air (floating alongside the intoxicating scent of funnel cakes). In fact, it was at a Magic City Art Connection that I rediscovered block printmaking and got inspired to explore it again.
The 25th edition of the city’s biggest art festival is this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Linn Park downtown. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, it’s free, and it’s a vibrant event you really shouldn’t skip. More than 200 artists from around the city, state, and country will be scattered throughout the park, showing the magic they’ve made using paint, watercolor, pencils, ink, wood, fiber, metal, and who knows what else. You don’t have to buy anything, but I guarantee you’ll see something you’ll like—and perhaps something to spark your own artistic ideas.

In Love With: Freebies

You’ve seen the news. The economy dips while the price of gas, food, and everything else rises. If you’re trying to watch your budget or boost your savings, your entertainment options can get limited pretty quickly. Fortunately the Birmingham area is home to plenty of spots where you can have fun for free. Here are some to seek out no matter the state of the economy:

In Love With: Mid-century Modern
The Parliament House may be gone, but its swinging ‘60s spirit lives on just over Red Mountain. That’s where you’ll find Office Park, probably the greatest concentration of mid-century modern architecture in the Birmingham area.
You know mid-century modern architecture, with its sleek lines, cool facades, and prominent use of glass and metal. It can be beautiful (such as in the Parliament House’s circular lobby with the floating staircase) or hideous, and while that modern look was a dominant architectural style nationwide in the 1950s and 60s, Birmingham doesn’t seem to be teeming with examples from that era—except at Office Park.

In Love With: Walking in a Winter Wonderland
A rock with a view. Charles Buchanan/The Terminal.
Winter is not my favorite time of year in Birmingham. The frequent gray skies and stark, barren trees make me miss my lush, green city of the warmer months. So the other day, when the sun popped out to provide a gloriously bright, somewhat warm weekend, I got out in it. Specifically, I got myself out to Moss Rock Preserve in Hoover.

In Love With: Living Like a Hedonist For Less Than $10
I’m going to take a leaping wild guess here and say that the readership of the Terminal is no stranger to “Pinched Wallet Syndrome.” I’ve discovered that Birmingham has an amazing wealth of free stuff to do, and depending on your taste, even free food that can be had (grazing at Whole Foods, anyone?). But there’s a special niche I’ve discovered of “Things That Should Cost More, But Don’t,” if you know where to look. I’m in love with three things that allow me to live like a Hilton, even when I’m closer to Motel 8 material: the tamarind margarita at Sol Y Luna in Lakeview, At Home in downtown Homewood, and the lobster cakes at V. Richard’s in Forest Park.
