Kyle threatened with “the boot”

We’re not really sure if Jefferson County Commission president Bettye Fine Collins would have really kicked out Birmingham Weekly columnist Kyle Whitmire at the end of today’s post meeting conference. All we’ll say is imagine what the post over on Mixed Media would have been if she had.

Kyle’s piece from earlier today includes video from last week and links to the comments made by Collins that he attempted to raise questions about.

Help Hannah Grace

Hannah Grace Harrison is a three year old girl from Dothan, AL who was diagnosed with cancer last Spring. She is currently at Children’s Hosptial here in Birmingham, AL and she’s finished her final round (6 total) of chemo including a bone marrow transfusion. We found out about Hannah from one of our former contributors, Travis Bryant.

Hannah Grace needs our help. She is in dire need of platelets. They are continuously giving her blood and platelet transfusions. If you live in the state of Alabama you can donate the platelets. Giving platelets is the same process as giving blood.

  1. Call the American Red Cross at 888.905.3344
  2. Tell them that you want to donate platelets and you want to be a direct donor for Hannah Grace Harrison.
  3. They will take down your information and will call you back with a time to schedule the donation.

Wade Kwon of Wade on Birmingham needs your help before 3 p.m. tomorrow to pick which haiku he’ll be reading at BMA Speaks (one more link in case the museum’s site is still down).

Samford tuned up for its marquee matchup on Saturday with a win over Georgia Southern tonight.

Lt. Governor Jim Folsom, Jr. launched an Alabama Health Initiative earlier today statewide called the Lt. Governor’s Challenge, not to be confused with the Scale Back Alabama! campaign that’s already in full swing.

In other health related news, while Children’s Hospital began its new green project with a wrecking ball earlier today, the St. Vincent’s system‘s new president & CEO, John D. O’Neil, announced that he’d be leaving his current job in upsate New York yesterday.

Finally, for those who saw our tweet earlier today about NBC 13, Alec Harvey gets confirmation.

Langford supports reduced mail delivery schedule

712_04158_10_29_04Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford’s office sent out a release earlier today supporting the United States Postal Service’s request to potentially reduce mail delivery service to five days a week.

The mayor’s comments in the release favors the idea of eliminating Saturday mail, which is what most of us assume the USPS would be suggesting. However, they aren’t sure what day it’ll be if the request is granted by Congress.

It could be Tuesday for all we know

Seriously.

East Lake wants to stay weird

A call has been sent out to all artists, musicians, poets, prose, and liberal thinkers to “…relocate and create our own Art’s District here in the shadows of Birmingham.” The Keep East Lake Weird and East Lake Arts District movements have Yahoo Groups that have been in existence for at least the last year. Organizers are attempting to leverage the development of an artists community among the area’s 1920s era bungalows with the potential revitalization of the community’s downtown area – the blocks near 1st Avenue North and Oporto-Madrid Blvd.

UPDATE: Is the Heritage Festival returning?

UPDATE – 5.19.2009: According to Urbanham.com, the festival will return in mid-August. Here are the details.

A quick look around the Internet late last night brought up this page of information for folks wondering about the future of the Birmingham Heritage Festival.

There is no location listed but there are dates for this year’s event (in August) and contact information for anyone looking to be involved in the festival. We’ll keep an eye on it and look forward to doing some coverage of it this summer.

Fireworks at the BJCC yesterday

We’ve known for some time (well, some of us have) that Alabama State Representative Mary Moore has wanted City Council representation on the BJCC’s board. Well, yesterday she decided to make those comments again during the BJCC Board meeting and had some words with the city’s current representation on the board, Mayor Larry Langford. Apparently, a lot of words.

I’ve got some words about the situation of my own today over on My Birmingham.
