Birmingham Police Department new decals

Birmingham’s Police Department appears to have settled on a new decal package for their vehicles. It was one of the early initiatives announced when Larry Langford was elected mayor late last year by himself and chief A.C. Roper.

Here’s a picture of one of them on patrol in the Five Points West area close to Fair Park Arena earlier today.

So, click here and let us know what do you think?

BTW, if you’re in the area today, stop by and say hello at Family Tech Day!

City Stages band alert!

If you head on over to Timetable, you’ll find out which stage Old Crow Medicine Show is playing on and what time they’re scheduled to go on as part of City Stages 20

Sweet music for some local NPR fans

WBHM logoThat may be the sound of local public radio fans enjoying the sound of NPR programming becoming more noticeable on Birmingham’s Alabama Public Radio station WBHM 90.3 FM. The station has announced that due to the Classical Public Radio Network‘s planned closure before the end of the year, they will be introducing three new shows from NPR to our local programming schedule.

The three new shows, The Diane Rehm Show, Here and Now, and Talk of the Nation.will begin broadcasting locally on Monday, March 31.

The radio station’s website has additional information about the changes being made, coincidentally during their spring pledge drive.

Think about supporting the hub

Let’s get this second announcement out of the way:

The Terminal is implementing a voluntary subscription model beginning today!

Now that I’ve got your attention, I’m going to explain why we’ve decided to go in that direction and what it means to you (or you can just go directly to our new support page).

Giving for the soul in Birmingham

Soul patrol convention partyFans of former American Idol Taylor Hicks must be proud of some of his fans. They have organized a nonprofit organization called Harmony for the Soul and have announced a National Soul Patrol Convention for early May here in Birmingham May 9 & 10(thanks to Idol Stalker for the tip).

The group is not affiliated with Hicks but definitely believes in his spirit of giving. Monies collected during the convention will benefit Kid One Transport and the Alabama/Georgia chapters of Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Visit the organization’s website for more information about it and the event (and to purchase tickets).

Grow your mustaches for the kids…

MustacheIt’s time for the Sweetest ‘Stache contest here in Birmingham. You can visit the Mustaches for Kids website to learn more about how this competition came to be and who benefits from the growth of facial hair for four weeks. Growing season in this case will be from April 1 – May 1, with a kick-off Clean Shaven Day party happening at The Bottletree on April Fool’s Day. Our effort will benefit Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.

There will be Mustache Checkpoint Days around town throughout the month at area bars (April 10, 17 & 24 @ 8 p.m.). I’m sure that we’ll get more information about the location of these events later on, though we do know that the one on the 17th will be at Rojo.

Come on, any chance to take part in a competition that includes being recognized for “beer foam retention” – when the ‘staches are judged on Thursday, May 1 @ The Bottletree – needs to be shouted from the rooftops…
