Children, puppies or hipsters? You decide.

Luckie Choose Your Charity screenshotThe folks over at Birmingham, AL-based Luckie and Co. have $6,000 to give away to charity this holiday season – and they want your help to figure out how to divvy it up.

If you visit a special section of their website (click here to get there) before December 31, you can decide how the money is split up.

Your choices are puppies, children and creatives.

No, they’re not going to tell you exactly who’s getting the money until you place your vote (and we don’t know what they are either) but it’s definitely an interesting way to engage the community for the holidays.

Jimmie Hale Mission Expands

Birmingham's Jimmie Hale Mission new constructionIt wasn’t big news, but this past spring the Jimmie Hale Mission, one of Birmingham’s most respected men’s missions and shelters, moved to a new location on the former Thomas School grounds on 3420 2nd Avenue North. The building was donated by the city of Birmingham and went through extensive renovation. It now houses 175 beds on 3 floors.

According to Bhamwiki, the mission received a $245,00 federal grant to construct a new chapel and administrative facilities and it looks like they’ve wasted no time getting started. Construction began last week on the new wing of the Shepura Men’s Center as well as a basketball court.

Blog Action Day 2008

Today is Blog Action Day. It’s a day where bloggers from all backgrounds focus at least one of their posts on a specific topic – this year’s topic is poverty – that will aim to “raise awareness, initiate action and to shake the web!” There are currently just under 12,000 blogs taken part in this (I’ve already written one post on my personal blog; David Griner’s posted as well) and we here at The Terminal wanted to make our readers aware of the day and of some of the organizations or initiatives that you could support in whatever way you can (today and every day). But instead…

We already have one Magic City Question today, but perhaps the idea of this post may generate some more discussion. Which organizations do you currently support that deal with the issue of poverty (on any level) and why? Is there anything else that we can be doing? if you know of other local bloggers that participated, share their links in the comments section as well.

Hungry? Here’s an option that gives back this week

This week area Guthrie’s restaurants & NBC 13 are giving away complimentary chicken boxes with donations made; proceeds will benefit the United Way of Central Alabama.

You may want to check out the list of the locations that will be taking part in this effort this week before you head out for lunch via United Way’s PDF.

Giving for the soul in Birmingham

Soul patrol convention partyFans of former American Idol Taylor Hicks must be proud of some of his fans. They have organized a nonprofit organization called Harmony for the Soul and have announced a National Soul Patrol Convention for early May here in Birmingham May 9 & 10(thanks to Idol Stalker for the tip).

The group is not affiliated with Hicks but definitely believes in his spirit of giving. Monies collected during the convention will benefit Kid One Transport and the Alabama/Georgia chapters of Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Visit the organization’s website for more information about it and the event (and to purchase tickets).
