Irene Blalock named new BPL director

We just received word that the current associate director of the Birmingham Public Library, Irene Blalock, has been named its new director. She was one of several candidates for the position, which received a lot of attention from The Birmingham News earlier this month. Barbara Sirmans, the former director, announced her retirement in August; Pamela Lyons has been serving as the organization’s interim director. According to the News’ account, Blalock has spent her entire career with the BPL.

Ringling Bros. sends the clowns into Birmingham today!

Clowns from “The Greatest Show on Earth” (a.k.a. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus) are hanging out at area Birmingham Public Library branches today. You probably don’t still have time to catch them at the Smithfield branch for their 10 a.m. appearance.

It may be a better bet to head on over to the Central branch this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. for a special performance. A great way to laugh off the craziness at the end of the week!
