UPDATE: 7.30.2008, 10:22 a.m. Updated awards info after the jump:

Birmingham’s IN crowd was at Vulcan Park despite the bad weather last night to celebrate the release of the IN book, compiled nominations from more than 4,000 people through the CVB’s INBirmingham.org website or one of the 50 boxes located throughout metro Birmingham. The book contains 224 IN spots separated organized in the following categories: dining, coffee & confections, nightlife, shopping, arts & entertainment, attractions and events. Hundreds of people came out and sampled food and beverages from some of the nominated spots in (including beer from Good People Brewing Co., pizza from Cosmo’s and Ginger Margaritas from Bottletree) and dance lessons from Steppers and Walkers.

The books will be available at area Books-A-Million locations and The Alabama Booksmith for $9.99.

Take photos of what’s IN

The IN Birmingham campaign’s been making a lot of folks in the area consider just what that means and how to record it. Libby’s been filling us in on what some of the results have been from the nominations that were collected (here’s her current post), now the folks over at a new Birmingham area photoblog are asking folks to submit photos to their site.

And while there are currently several photos in the Magic City Flickr Group as well as our own Terminal Flickr Group, the more places these photos are shared, particularly when associated with this question, the better!

You know you wanna find out…

So Libby’s going to start leaking IN spots over on Timetable today… no, seriously.

What’s IN?

This is a call to arms for Birmingham fans and those who want to show others what this city is all about. About the good things IN Birmingham.

So often we hear people being negative about our town. People who say, ‘there’s nothing to do in this town’ – clearly have not been paying attention or reading Christina‘s posts over on Timetable. But this is our chance to give a voice to the quieter majority who know there are great places to eat, drink, or just hangout in Birmingham.

Our convention and visitors bureau, along with other groups like the chamber of commerce, are collecting nominations for what YOU think are the best spots IN town. Your favorite IN spots. At the end of the nomination process (read: the end of JUNE!) we will make a book, a Zagat-style guide to Birmingham based on your input.

So click here to nominate your favorite spot. You don’t have much time left.

I’ll be hopping on The Terminal every Wednesday to showcase a different IN spot up until the book is out, so stay tuned!

Random Shots: That’s a big box to fill up

The view looking at the IN sign

We figured you’d enjoy these images from this afternoon’s installation of the first of several large “IN” Birmingham ballot boxes across metro Birmingham.

NOTE: There are more images from the installation available for viewing – just click on the image to see them.

We’ve talked about this project late last month when it was officially announced. This one is located in front of the Belk at Brookwood Village. Based on what we learned today, you’ll have several chances to make sure your suggestions are heard.

There will be about 50 (much smaller) boxes located throughout the area (and a few more big ones), allowing participants to share their favorite “in” spot. The collected results will be used to create a guide that will be distributed to visitors to the city and its surrounding area.
