Where to next for Birmingham area skaters?

That’s the question being asked by many of them as they learned that the skate ramps they’d recently created on the site of the old Terminal Station – and next to the 5th Avenue North on ramp to I-20/59 – had been removed early yesterday by the Alabama Department of Transportation.  The makeshift ramps had been constructed as a result of the dismantling of the Homewood Central Park skate ramp this summer.

Still not sure what to do?

Lots to share with you this weekend. Seems that the crisp fall air has arrived right on time for some fabulous events both inside and out, in and around the Magic City. Read more on Timetable, The Terminal’s art and entertainment destination.

If you’ve ever wanted to see multiple world-recording holding eating champion Takeru Kobayashi in person, then you’ll just have to head to this Saturday’s UAB Blazers football game against Alabama State at Legion Field. He’ll be in town for the  Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship qualifier that was originally supposed to take place in Blazer Village next to the Old Gray Lady before the game. Instead, due to security concerns, it’s been moved inside. According to this report on the Krystal Square Off blog, they’ll even be broadcasting the competition on the Jumbotron screens. Thanks to Nathan for the tip.

Will Kirby be in town tomorrow?

We’re full of questions today over here…

kirbysqsqThere’s a press release that went out yesterday that’s got some folks thinking that the popular video game character may be making an appearance in Birmingham, AL tomorrow. The info that we do know? A Nintendo “authority” will be in attendance at Kirby Middle School for interviews and it’ll be optimal to see the spectale between 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. That and it’s a cute press release. Our money’s on the little guy being in the Magic City himself plugging his new game (due out on September 22), but we’ll see…

What’s in a “mutlipurpose facility” anyway?

We’ve learned that Mayor Langford and BJCC executive director Jack Fields will be participating in an online discussion about the long proposed multipurpose facility via streaming video on myfoxal.com tomorrow (Thursday) at 1 p.m.

The discussion is scheduled to last approximately 30 minutes, with issues such as the facility’s funding plan and its tie to taxes, location, size, costs and need of the facility being covered. There’s no link as of yet, but we’re figuring that you’ll be able to find it on their front page close to start time.  Some current info – last week, the BJCC Board approved Langford’s funding plan for the facility, shortly after hearing via an independent study that downtown is the best location for it. The BJCC is now reviewing architecture proposals for the project  (a source of debate here in The Magic City for at least the past 10 years).

Music and movies over on Timetable

There are many of you that probably wonder just what does that stationmaster do when he’s sitting there editing posts? Well, even if you don’t, I’m going to tell you anyway – I’m normally drowning out the sounds of the outside (except for the trains that run by our current headquarters) with a fairly eclectic collection of music. This addiction of sorts has picked up steam since running The Terminal has led to a growing collection of CDs that need to be shared with everyone else. That includes the new album by Dead Confederate (released today) that you’ll actually see me attempt to review as soon as you head over to Timetable

You’ll also get a chance to hit the previous post button and check out Whitney’s recent chat with Crewless Productions’ Chance Shirley. So even though it’s a gorgeous day out there, take a few minutes and hop on over there.

See, a music and movie fix over there…

How much will that drive cost?

Considering all of the recent talk about rising gas prices and getting from point A to point B, especially after this weekend’s panic, we thought you’d want to check out this page. This results page gives details about driving from Birmingham to Salem, OR, but the site allows you to see just how much gas (and money) it would take for you to get pretty much anywhere you’re headed. It could come in handy, especially when the holiday season starts up.
