  I’m thinking in the next few months we’ll start seeing news stories about the increase of skateboarding on public property.

  Sure the park board wants to recognize the few negative incidents at the park, but what about recognizing the more numerous incidents where teens were skateboarding instead of causing trouble elsewhere?

  I skateboarded from middle school through college and consider it a positive effect on my life. I used to frequent the Homewood skate park and never had any problems there. These people are overreacting, to say the least.

  Actually, I rescind my previous comment…

  What the hell were these kids doing outside in the first place?

  Shouldn’t they have been on the couch watching reruns of American Idol?

  It was because of the skatepark that I started going back to Homewood park.

  It’s sad that because of a few incidents that the whole skate portion of the park will be taken down.

  Homewood needs to rethink.

  While the Mayor had a valid point, most of the skaters causing the issues are from other towns, and with out the skatepark, they’d have no reason to return, I still think it was wrong to get rid of it. Perhaps a bit more enforcement. Payed rates for non-locals, or a membership of sorts. Bad way to go about it, but will probably be effective.

  It saddens me to see the skate portion of the park go. Although I rarely frequent that park, I always admired Homewood for including it. I’ll be interested to see if the removal of the skate park has any real impact on the criminal activity there. It may be that the Board has been too quick to judge and has based their decisions more on stereotypes than on any real evidence as to the root of the problem. Then again, they may be spot on. Regardless, I still see the removal of the park as a loss to the city.

  i’m completely disheartened to see the skate park come down. i come from chicago and when i moved down here, was proud to see that a town like homewood had such a park right in it’s center. i thought how progressive the city was in embracing this as a provision for free outdoor recreation for it’s residents. it’s the lack of a place to go that causes problems. every time i drove past, the park was crowded with all kinds of people, and that’s a special thing for town to have: unity. now what?

  I had always hoped that Hoover would have a skatepark, but now with Homewood taking the skatepark away I doubt it will ever happen.
