If you hadn’t noticed, we’re riding high here at The Terminal about our future workspace. I’d like to hear you guys mirror that excitement by getting pumped about what’s going on in town this weekend. Check out these noteworthy events and don’t be shy about letting the rest of us know what you plan on doing.

If you haven’t heard about Opera Birmingham’s presentation of Verdi’s La Traviata you’ve officially been living in a hole. This highly publicized performance, “starring Alabama native Susanna Phillips, in her very first Violetta, and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra” happens tonight and Sunday. This evening the performance begins at 7:30 and Sunday’s matinee begins at 2:30. The tickets range from $15-78 depending on your preference, but I’m sure it will sound beautiful from any seat in the Alabama Theater.

Saturday evening the Alys Stephens Center will be presenting the amazing Spanish Harlem Orchestra. This show starts at 8 but if you’re up for some salsa dancing you can enjoy a free lesson before the show. Students shouldn’t miss this one, because it’s definitely a deal at $20, as for the rest of you don’t let the sorry economy keep you from enjoying an awesome show. Non-student prices range from $25-45.

got plans 2.0 (3/13-3/15)

As the writer of the new got plans 2.0 column I’ve graciously been given the liberty to write what I wish when it comes to the awesome events happening each weekend here in Birmingham. I’m a good man for the job because I’m no freshman to what the city has to offer, but in this third week I’m finding it hard to pick and choose the Terminal-worthy events that you readers may be looking for.

So I’ve been thinking and have decided that I’m going to put got plans in your hands this weekend. Got plans 2.0 is three weeks old today; way too young to be setting a standard and definitely not to old to keep it from becoming what you want it to be. Our philosophy at The Terminal is to maintain a conversation between the contributors and our community. I want that with got plans; that’s why I ask you to comment if you know of something else going on or if I totally missed the mark in terms of my picks. Ultimately, my plans are your plans and they should be good plans ’cause you guys deserve them.

Without a doubt spring has blown in with the breeze and I recommend you head over to Rojo for Happy Hour after work today to kick it off El Mariachi style with $2.25 domestics, $3.00 imports, and $7.25 PBR pitchers. Once you find yourself slightly inebriated and filled to the max with your choice of Latin or American cuisine, I know the comic nerd in you is going to guide you to the nearest theatre to see Watchmen, but I wouldn’t miss the Ben Kweller show at Workplay. Tonight is the night for this sort of revelry because tomorrow and Sunday are to be spent outdoors, per my orders (I was pre-med, so I know what’s best for your health).

Got Plans 2.0 – 2.27-3.1

For those of you who are Terminal regulars, I like to think that you were all teary-eyed back in October when Christina wrote her last Got plans? post.  Without it how else were you going to know what to do for the weekend?

I don’t know if you were able to realize it, but what The Terminal laid out in that weekly post was the power to one up those who waste time late Friday afternoon searching the web or flipping through various weekly-published event calendars searching for something to do.  Well, after a justified hiatus, today marks the return of got plans.  With a new style and new direction I set out to be the genius behind your weekend.  As the new writer, let me do all the work.  I’ll flip through the pages and click the links, from there I’ll suggest three or four Terminal-worthy events.  If anything it’ll just be the things you shouldn’t be missing. 

On the flip side, I don’t have the swagger to claim that I’m writing a definitive weekend guide, so if I leave something out, make a comment and let the rest of us know what’s up.  Above all, when someone asks how you know about all this cool stuff, give The Terminal some credit and we’ll keep this conversation going…

Got plans this weekend? 10.31 – 11.2

Sad to say, my plans include telling you good folks bye-bye. This is your last “Got plans?” column from yours truly. And it’s not going to be a very good one – in the next 30 minutes I’ve got to finish hemming my son’s costume, go buy a fruit tray for his classroom Halloween party and figure out how to make tissue-paper ghosts, my craft contribution to the party. Yep, my time management skills are out of control. Something had to go so this will be short and sweet.

Got plans this weekend? 10.24 – 10.26

Sure today is all dreary and rainy, but Saturday and Sunday look nice with crisp fall temperatures to put a rosy glow in your cheeks. So bundle up, don’t forget the kids, and head outside.

First up on Saturday, the 6th annual Art in Avondale Park festival. Art activities for the kids, jazz on the stage, arts and craft vendors. The festival kicks off with a children’s parade at 10, wraps up at 4. New this year is the music. Since this is down the street from me, we’ll definitely be there. Free admission.

Next, there are harvest celebrations at both botanical gardens Saturday — Aldridge and Birmingham. I’ll take them in alphabetical order. Aldridge promises “folk artists, food vendors, pumpkin painting, face painting, John Scalici’s drum circle, magician Michael Baker and pop/rock group Vasa.” Kids should wear their costumes for the contest and parade. Free admission, hours 9 to 1. Moving on, the BBG is hosting their first Great Pumpkin festival from 10 to 2, also free admission. Here’s what they offer: “cotton candy, scavenger hunt, and a showing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” Jones Valley Farm will display a giant pumpkin with a celebrity pumpkin carver! Specialty children’s menu provided by Kathy G, costume contest with prizes. Artists and various vendors will be there displaying their work.” Both guaranteed to give my boy a good naptime.

Got plans this weekend? 10.17 – 10.19

Okay, here’s what I’m either doing or would like to be doing this weekend. Other ideas? Put them in the comment section. I love comments and I’m nosy so I love to know your plans too.

Now that gas is cheaper, driving to Tuscaloosa/Northport for an art show doesn’t seem that crazy of an idea. And with the money you save on gas, you can buy something cool to hang on the wall. Better investment than the stock market right now. The 37th Annual Kentuck Festival of the Arts is Saturday and Sunday, 9 to 5 both days. Daily tickets are $10, under 12 free. I went last year for the first time and really enjoyed the selection of works and the music. Fair warning, the food is a little pricey and you’ll want to get in line early.

Got plans this weekend? 10.10 – 10.12

OK, here’s the run down for the weekend. As always, add what’s missing in the comments section.

You can join the folks at Jones Valley Urban Farm Saturday from noon to 5 for their “Fall Harvest Pumpkin Celebration.” Pumpkin carving, lots of children’s activities, music and food — all for FREE. The farm is located downtown at 701 25th St. North.

Also on Saturday from noon to 5 and also FREE, it’s “Art of Flight” Family Day at the Birmingham Museum of Art. It’s in conjunction with the new “Leonardo da Vinci: Drawings from the Biblioteca Reale in Turin” exhibit. Here’s what I copied from the Web site: “Learn about flight from U.S. Space and Rocket Center experts and make your own flying machine. Meet City of Birmingham mounted police and their horses, just like the ones Leonardo loved to draw, along with feathered friends from the Birmingham Zoo. Meet a character straight out of Leonardo’s time, compliments of Birmingham Children’s Theatre.” Remember, even If you don’t have kids, the museum is always a bargain by being FREE.

Got plans this weekend? 10.3-10.5

If you know me, then you know I need lots of time to get all pretty for Kahne and the rest of the racing field so here’s a quick run down so I can get back to the mirror.

Ashlyn Stallings is a junior at Samford and we’re guessing she’s a pretty, talented and well-spoken all around great gal because she’s going to be competing in some beauty pageants this fall, working her way toward Miss Alabama. She’s already got a platform — Breast Cancer Awareness — and she’s got an event — Pilates Painted Pink — to raise money for it. All-skill levels are welcome at Homewood Park this Saturday morning 11 a.m. for an outdoor class lead by Mary Margaret Scalici, instructor with the Alabama Ballet and The Pilates Place. Tickets are $25 with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama. For more information, check out Ashlyn’s blog on al.com, State of Pink. Samford newspaper staff, involved on campus — Ashlyn sure reminds me of someone so I’m wishing her success in all she does.

Space One Eleven is having a yard sale this Saturday. And not just any yard sale, it’s a Big FATT sale — a “Found Around the Town Treasure” sale in its studios downtown, 2409 2nd Ave. North. I’m all for supporting this visual arts non-profit so go buy something from them. Sale starts at 8 a.m. and will wrap up at 1.

Got plans this weekend? 9.26 – 9.28

While the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival is the big deal this weekend, there are some other options. Really! Would I lie to you? Never … at least not intentionally .. well, maybe if you ask “do I look fat in this?”

Did you hear the news that the Alabama State Fair moved from the Fairgrounds to Pelham and the former Oak Mountain Amphitheatre*? Afraid you already missed all the rides and cotton candy and pig races? Not to fear, the fair is open until Sunday. Now it’s not cheap — tickets are $8, wristbands for the rides are $20 (but hey, every day is wristband day) and then add on another $5 for parking. But the fair only comes once a year and where else are you going to buy overpriced caramel apples? Go ahead and buy two, I’m not judging. And you look great in those jeans. Pass me the funnel cake.
