bhamscoopFellow Birmingham-based online publication My Scoop announced this morning that they have launched a second site for Nashville, TN. The website launched in 2007 and currently receives 9,426 monthly page visits from the Music City, leading to My Scoop Media, Inc. CEO Amy Lemley Bailey‘s decision to formally expand into Tennessee.

Party at Shift WorkSpace tonight!

shift_work_space_logo1The paint’s dry, the furniture’s assembled and the front door is ready to be open to visitors at Shift WorkSpace this evening. One of Alabama’s first coworking space (and our new offline home) will host a grand opening event tonight (May 28) beginning at 5 p.m. The space and its founder, Drew Jones, has garnered a great deal of press recently, including a follow up brief about tonight’s opening in the BBJ and a story in today’s edition of The Birmingham News (it’s in the business section). There’s still time to RSVP, though at this point, you may just want to come on over and see what the excitement’s about.

The festival will also include community empowerment seminars running from August 11-13 at Boutwell Auditorium.

Urbanham.com posted the official press release which contains the names of the first acts to be confirmed for this year’s festival as well as a link to its new website. Announced acts include Keyshia Cole, Angie Stone, Chaka Khan, Flo Rida, and Atlantic Starr. The website also lists Musiq Soulchild as scheduled to perform though they were not included on the press release.

There had been an announcement made via the Internet in late January.

Come on over to MCQ and let us know what you think about this summer of music so far.

bhamcentral.com has launched

bhamcentral.com logoAttendees to this year’s BarCamp Birmingham had the opportunity to hear from Harris Reynolds about the experience of developing and launching a new website in one week – bhamcentral.com. Harris felt the need to explore and provide a solution to the issue of the online community portal.

You can read what was driving his desire to create one on his blog, Simplifying Software, check out the presentation on Vimeo (and think about checking out all of the other presentations from BarCamp as they become available) and try bhamcentral.com out for yourself and see what you think.

Get ready to welcome The Hub

Good morning Birmingham (and elsewhere)! First of all, thanks to those of you that came out last night – it was a lot of fun, and I think that you enjoyed yourselves as well.

The big news story from last night’s event – we’re doing a beta launch of a social network for Birmingham!

The goal is for The Hub to launch on Monday morning, at least, that’s what our web team is thinking right now. The general idea of launching a social network is not to reinvent the wheel. The idea is to provide a place to have the conversation take place for Birmingham online.

For the techies in the area, we’ll be using BuddyPress to build the network and we’re hoping to be able to use Facebook Connect so that you don’t have to create yet another account log in. It will be a beta, so I’ll apologize in advance for site outages and issues, but I think that it will help us

If you’re interested in being a beta tester for the network, feel free to email us at info@bhamterminal.com.

There will be a little more about this later on today. Enjoy the ride!

Come out to The Bottletree tonight!

bldglogoNo, I have not been screaming from the top of the City Federal building asking you to come out to The Bottletree tonight for our fairly mellow celebration of this site’s two years of existence (though that does give me an idea for next year).

Hopefully the weather won’t be too bad this evening and the basketball games on the screens should keep your attention if the announcement I’ll be making doesn’t…

See, now don’t you just want to come because of that last sentence alone? The radio silence can be blamed partially on tonight’s announcement as well, but not entirely. The fun’s starting around 5 p.m., there will be some white Terminal Ts given away to some of the lucky attendees (we’ll have a few for sale as well).

If you can come out, great; if not, pass this evite link along to a friend.

They really want you to go shopping…

Eat at Home AlabamaThe Alabama Grocers Association recently unveiled a new website called Eat At Home Alabama. According to the site, “agriculture and the grocery industry is 30% of Alabama’s economy and employs [more than] 200,000 people.” This means that their argument is that it’s a good thing for Alabama if you eat at home instead of eating out. The site will be promoting ways to save and healthy eating habits among other things.
