The Radio Carousel returns, unfortunately, for Live 100.5

Live 100.5‘s days may be numbered. Former station program director Dave Rossi hinted at what many local alternative music fans are talking about today yesterday via his Facebook status:

“The corporate sharks are circling and the end is near for yet another great radio station….or so I hear.”

A new Facebook group, Save Live 100.5, seems to have confirmed it with their creation earlier today. It currently has 850 members as of the initial posting of this piece.

Citadel Broadcasting, the station’s owner and the nation’s third largest owner of radio stations, filed for bankruptcy protection in late December. There is no official word as of yet, though advertisers with the station have stated on the Facebook group page that they’ve already been informed of the format change.

The station’s lineup includes Reg’s Coffee House, hosted by Scott Register. The station launched in August 2008 and then Terminal contributor Whitney Sides Mitchell had some fun covering its launch for us.

WBHM goes for another One and Done on Thursday

WBHM logo Fans of Birmingham’s public radio station, WBHM, have a couple of reasons to be paying close attention to the station in the coming weeks. First of all, their successful One and Done! fundraising campaign returns this Thursday, October 22. They’re asking supporters to consider making their donations in advance (maybe even online if they’re so inclined).

They’ve also announced changes to their weekday evening and weekend lineup (available for viewing in PDF format) beginning on November 14. Yes, if you’re noticing something too, you may want to check out the frequently asked questions about the changes.

Farewell The Vulcan, 105.5 FM goes “legacy”

This morning folks expecting to hear Lex & Terry as they were getting ready for work on 105.5 The Vulcan were surprised to instead be listening to the Steve and Leah Morning Show being simulcast from WERC 960 AM.

The change is not a temporary one as the station’s owner, ClearChannel Communications, posted this press release on the new website for 105.5 FM this morning. This marks the most recent change in the history of the frequency. It had most recently been a gospel station, consistently ranking as one of the top 10 stations in the market for almost three years until its format was changed in December 2006.

So, Ken found us

Long-time residents of Birmingham and fans of Beaner and Ken may be wondering if the voice of Vulcan the Merman in the Shark and Ray video series created by Provenance Digital Media for McWane Science Center sounds familiar for a reason…

Well, we’ll answer this another way… This morning we got an email from Ken thanking us for posting the screenshot and link from the Beaner and Ken website last May and letting us know about his new gig he started two weeks ago in his new Southern hometown – Columbia, SC.

Accoding to Ken, the new Tyler and Ken Show (the blog’s up, the website’s coming) is doing really well and it’s available via audio stream at New 92 Country’s (yes, country’s) website. They’re also working on their own site.

The Memorial Day weekend countdown is here…

So let’s give you a few things to do to fill that last half hour fifteen minutes…

I was one of three bloggers that were interviewed for this week’s episode of WBHM‘s arts and culture program Tapestry. The segment was on blogging and featured myself, Wade Kwon and Ashley Umbaugh. You can check out the story as it ran or the excerpts from my extended interview. If you want to hear it on the radio, it’s on tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. on 90.3 FM.

Our conductor Jason Donaldson’s still suffering from the spill he took on his bike a couple of weeks ago, but he’s pulled together a great set of musical options for you to check out for the weekend. You can always follow Jason on Twitter to see what else he’s up to.

I couldn’t pass up a chance to plug Catalyst’s new website before we continue on this morning’s food kick. This evening they’ll officically launch their redesigned website with an event at Rojo featuring a performance by Matthew Mayfield and a remote by Live 100.5 FM. If you’ve got a moment, stop on by, especially since the first 75 that show up get free drink vouchers. If you get a chance, send us some photos from the event so we can share them with our readers… just saying…

Steve’s last day is Oct. 3

It won’t exactly be the same when you hear Steve Chiotakis‘ voice on the radio after October 3 – mainly because he’ll be ending his reports saying “Marketplace” instead of “WBHM.”

The local host of NPR’s Morning Edition (serving as a companion to many drivers during their commutes) and reporter for our local public radio station is leaving Birmingham to become a reporter for the Marketplace Morning Report, produced out of Los Angeles. The folks at 90.3 FM have an announcement about his departure up on their site. Plus, you may want to check out Steve’s personal site (the first link) in case you’re looking to buy…
