Who’s running for City Council on August 25?

New Birmingham, Alabama logoFolks had until yesterday to qualify for the August 25 municipal elections for Birmingham’s City Council and Board of Education. Runoffs if necessary would take place on October 6. That meant that I’ve spent most of today trying to find out how many of them have a web presence. The results follow below.

We start with the list of candidates running for City Council’s nine (9) representative seats. It starts after the jump.

BTW, no surprise, it’s a long one with 46 people qualifying by the deadline.

On the hub: New faces and questions

Well, there’s a familiar one in there as well. One thing you’ll no doubt notice as you return from the holiday weekend next week is a couple of changes to the front page so those of you that visit the site regularly know what’s going on elsewhere on The Terminal. However, for the time being:

You’ve got until noon tomorrow to enter for a chance to win tickets to The Duke Spirit show at The Bottletree this weekend;

Terri’s returned and so has In Love With, and just in time for the holidays;

It seems a lot of folks are in love with Josh’s review of Maki Fresh;

and we’re wondering what favorite Thanksgiving dish are you looking forward to having on your table come Thursday?

And we’ll give you two ways to let us know if you’re coming out to Speakeasy on December 5 – Facebook and Upcoming.

Keeping track of Gustav

For those of you wanting to keep track of what’s going on with Hurricane Gustav, there are several ways to find out, including a page created to keep track of tweets and website links about the major hurricane currently preparing for landfall in the Gulf Coast, set up on JazzyChad.com.

Here in Birmingham The Birmingham News reports that shelters are ready to house as many as 2,400 residents fleeing the storm, though officials are expecting that as many as 4,000 may come to the metro area. Early reports suggest that they may need just a little more space. Those seeking information on shelter locations should call 800.206.0816.

What a weekend for music in Birmingham

We’re hoping that you’ll be able to come and support us at The Terminal Concert on Saturday night at The Bottletree. If you don’t come out though, there’s no excuse for not finding yourself enjoying some incredible performances throughout the Magic City that evening. I’ll get into that statement more on Thursday over on my Birmingham. Today over on Timetable, we’ve started to provide some information on all of your options.

We’ve got a review of WIld Sweet Orange’s latest CD (their release party is Saturday), a quick look at Sorry Saints, performing as part of our show Saturday, and the schedule for this weekend’s Function at the Junction in Ensley.

So yeah, we’re pretty much daring you to say there’s nothing to do…

You going to BarCamp 2?

BarCamp Birmingham 2 - story logoThis weekend there will be a lot of folks at the Innovation Depot downtown participating in Birmingham’s second ever BarCamp (April 12 information). So you may be asking, “What is BarCamp?” It is our own “un”conference. OK, you probably need a little more info.

It’s a conference where the content is provided, chosen and presented by the attendees! It’s a great way to meet members of the local technology community and it’s FREE! You can sign up to attend and learn more about the sessions that are already being proposed by checking out its website. You may also follow their Twitter feed. You may also want to take a look at some of the sessions that are being proposed, including a chance to hear about some ideas for a certain website…

New Vulcan’s moving along

New Vulcan Ale House in progress

Special to The Terminal.

Exterior and interior demolition work has finally started recently (and quickly) on what will be the New Vulcan Ale House. Birmingham’s newest brew pub will occupy the former home for the Jimmie Hale Mission across from the main branch of the U.S. Post Office at 3rd Avenue & 24th Street North downtown.

Those that would like to find out a little more about the concept, look no further than this post made to Bhamdining.com back in late October or this story filed for the Birmingham News earlier that week.

Thanks to Jarrod for the tip.
