They’ve been getting those of us throughout the state ready for it for weeks, and this afternoon, AL.com’s new design was launched. Before the critics point this out, yes, you can find a similar look on other sites associated with them, including nj.com. Now with that out of the way…

It’s official: we suck

At least, based on current area blog launches, we seem to suck at providing information about arts and culture and music. Two new sites have launched in the last week to fill the void that we’ve attempted to fill with Timetable since our inception – bham.fm is a new music blog that will cover local as well as not so local info while bhamsandwich.com will be covering the arts and culture scene. What about Timetable, or the new (but not yet fully functioning like we want it to) calendar, destinations (FYI – submit events here)?

Networking Birmingham launches

Folks here in the city are quite connected, but they’re always looking for new ways to do so. NetworkingBirmingham has recently launched, including listings from ten area chambers of commerce, including Birmingham, Homewood, Hoover, Mountain Brook and Trussville, as well as a variety of other networking events becoming a resource that allows folks to track business networking events throughout metro Birmingham.

Users of the site can create a customizable calendar of all the events they wish to attend. It was created by Man in the Maze Marketing with the idea of helping business men and women throughout Birmingham become more effective networkers. They will work hand-in-hand with various Chambers in the metro region to ensure that the most current and accurate information is listed on the website. Users of the website can submit all types of networking events to be included on the calendar as well.

The Encyclopedia of Alabama launches (officially)

Encyclopedia of Alabama logo - Courtesy of websiteWe always plug our relationship with BhamWiki whenever we can. Today there was an official unveiling of what it would be like if the folks at the Wiki ever got a large grant to help supplement it. The Encyclopedia of Alabama was formally launched by Governor Riley today at the Alabama Humanities Foundation Leadership Summit and Awards Luncheon in Hoover (though the site’s been up and active since February). We’re interested in hearing what you think about it – and thanks to GoodCourage for giving up the head’s up. You can always direct message us via Twitter or any of the other contact methods with news tips and story ideas.

The First 100: City of Birmingham launches new website

Screenshot of new City of Birmingham websiteThe first part of the overhaul of the City of Birmingham’s online presence started yesterday, when they unveiled their new birminghamal.gov website (and don’t forget to put the www in front of it when you put it in the browser). The empty space is actually filled with news from the city when you visit. We’d let you know what else it can do here, but then that wouldn’t give you a reason to check out the first post we wrote about it to learn more about some of the features, now would it?

With the unveiling of the city’s revamped site, a new plan to have wireless access in the city and possibly a in-chambers debut of Over C’s new single “Don’t Trash My Hood” geared towards encouraging area youth to do their part in the city’s efforts to be cleaner and safer, you’d think the first council meeting of 2008 should be fairly straightforward. Not necessarily
