Imagicon fills a void

Imagicon logo - courtesy of the websiteFans of last year’s OmegaCcon conference here in downtown Birmingham can breathe a sigh of relief…

That first year science fiction conference has been replaced by a new first year sci-fi conference, Imagicon. The conference will be a little later than last year’s, taking place March 27-29 at the Sheraton Birmingham at the BJCC.

Their website appears to be receiving constant updates and it sounds like something that wants to be a part of the local scene for some time to come. It’s already got some folks excited, like Nicki.

Birmingham’s shovel ready!

I’ll admit I didn’t know what that term meant . until a recent consulting trip out to Colorado (and based on this, I may never get a chance to know). Now, it’s become one of the most popular terms associated with our national economic crisis. Now, Stimulus Watch you can track the progress of the $69 million dollars worth of projects that the city submitted for federal funding

We thought you’d like that ability. Go ahead and share your votes and thoughts on the individual items. The website’s homepage provides more information about how you can do just that as well as why it exists.

Crestwood Coffee Company… for now

Pye Parson recently became the new owner of the Crestwod Coffee Company on Birmingham’s East side. Pye also owns Birmingham IN spot Sol Garden two doors down from the neighborhood hangout spot, though she’s not sure of her plans for that space when its lease is up later this year.

Since implemented and proposed changes include allowing customers to establish accounts and regaining its beer and wine license in the near future, it only makes sense to consider changing the name. If you stop by, consider dropping a suggestion in the box at the bar.

Birmingham’s first The First 48 episode premieres tonight

Some of you may remember way back when Mayor Kincaid said that the Birmingham Police Department was not going to participate in the upcoming season of the popular A&E series The First 48, as brought up in a recent Black & White article. Well, tonight Birmingham will appear on the cable television series along with Tuscon, AZ beginning at 8 p.m. If you check out the episode, let us know what you think about it by adding to this posts comments below. And don’t worry, if you don’t get a chance to see this episode, there will be three other ones aired during the season, although we’re not quite sure when they’ll all air by… Or you can find out a little more about the detectives taking part in the filiming before you watch over at al.com.

Help Hannah Grace

Hannah Grace Harrison is a three year old girl from Dothan, AL who was diagnosed with cancer last Spring. She is currently at Children’s Hosptial here in Birmingham, AL and she’s finished her final round (6 total) of chemo including a bone marrow transfusion. We found out about Hannah from one of our former contributors, Travis Bryant.

Hannah Grace needs our help. She is in dire need of platelets. They are continuously giving her blood and platelet transfusions. If you live in the state of Alabama you can donate the platelets. Giving platelets is the same process as giving blood.

  1. Call the American Red Cross at 888.905.3344
  2. Tell them that you want to donate platelets and you want to be a direct donor for Hannah Grace Harrison.
  3. They will take down your information and will call you back with a time to schedule the donation.

UPDATE: Is the Heritage Festival returning?

UPDATE – 5.19.2009: According to Urbanham.com, the festival will return in mid-August. Here are the details.

A quick look around the Internet late last night brought up this page of information for folks wondering about the future of the Birmingham Heritage Festival.

There is no location listed but there are dates for this year’s event (in August) and contact information for anyone looking to be involved in the festival. We’ll keep an eye on it and look forward to doing some coverage of it this summer.

A new Batman for Birmingham

bhambatmanSomeone has donned the mask of the Caped Crusader, if only virtually, for the Magic City. This one hopes that they can make people aware of what’s going on around them in terms of crime.

Birmingham Batman has recently re-appeared as a MySpace profile that connects to a Spotcrime.com map of the area. The profile also includes an widget that pulls the RSS feed from our local Crimestoppers site. According to the profile, comments will be limited to information relevant to dealing with Birmingham crime. We don’t know who it is (though we wish we’d done it first 🙂 ), but we’re hoping that folks will take advantage of it. We’re thinking the original would be proud (we talked about him here in 2007), though we’re not sure…
