Take a Moment: Remembering the original Batman of Birmingham

October 10th, 2007 by Andre Natta · 6 Comments

When we recently posted about the new online crime map created by members of the group Victims of Birmingham Crime, we referenced the moderator of the group, who called himself the Birmingham Batman.

We figured that some of you would enjoy taking a look at the original Batman of Birmingham, Willie Perry, through the eyes of Lou Anders over on his blog, Bowing to the Future (including this new entry about him that includes a picture of the Batmobile itself).

As a child growing up in Birmingham it was always a big deal if you saw the Batman car. Seemed like everytime we went to an event down at the civic center or at Legion Field he would always be there ready to help people.

This world needs more people like the Birmingham Batman.

Thanks for linking to this story and bringing back wonderful childhood memories.

I was about 17 and working a florist delivery man when the van I was driving quit on I-59 in rush hour.
Next thing I knew the Batman was there help me repair a radiator with tools and supplies he had in his car.
He did not charge me anything and was just as humble as could be. A Great man!

I met Mr. Perry in 1984 while at working at St. Vincents Hospital security dept, I now live in Florida, I remember Batman as a man of genuine humility, and real concern for people. I still have the photo of him and his car he gave me. Batman we will remember you forever.

I’ve pieced together a brief biography for Bhamwiki:

    Bhamwiki:Willie Perry.

Jim, I’d truly love to add that photo to the site if you’re able to scan it.
