This evening people will gather at McWane Science Center to do their part to convince folks to take the next step in this year’s election. We’ve graciously provided space to folks from Empower Alabama over on my Birmingham so they can explain to you in their own words about Trick or Vote (especially since we’re serving as a sponsor for the event with WZZK, Red Mountain Bank, al.com. Thicket Magazine, Rojo and Birmingham Weekly).

Be Terminally Happy tonight…
In case you didn’t know, we’re hosting our first ever Terminally Happy Hour this evening over at The Bottletree. We’ve learned a couple of things since we first announced this event…
The Bottletree’s going to run happy hour prices until 8 p.m., meaning that we’ve actually got an extra hour for the event (thanks guys!)
There’s going to be a Mystery Science Theater 3000 marathon afterwards (here’s the info courtesy of The Bottletree).
So come on out, enjoy the patio, the Magic City Manhattan (bourbon, sweet vermouth, and a splash of bitters) and the company of fellow readers and members of our staff!
If you feel like letting us know if you’re going to be there, RSVP via our invites on MySpace or Facebook.

Fire + Ice joins Birmingham’s restaurant scene
Bob Farley/f8photo
Those that visit Five Points South may notice a new occupant in the space that formerly housed a Gap and Seaside, FL based-Quincy Art Shop.
Fire + Ice Improvisational Grill officially opened yesterday afternoon after inviting some folks to try out their newest location (and first in the Southeastern U.S.) on Saturday evening. Additional locations are planned for Dubai and Panama later this year.
Guests were treated to a sneak peek event of what the restaurant has to offer. We could write about the place, the lively atmosphere and the food, but we figured why not just share some images taken by Bob Farley at the event.
We also wouldn’t mind a comment or two from folks that have already tried it out to let us know what you think…

Soothing banks through music
One resident thinks that music and bumper stickers will help ease the Jefferson County sewer debt, though in a completely different way than Birmingham city councilor William Bell’s proposal or one suggested by Jefferson County Commission president Bettye Fine Collins. This proposal calls for visitors to jeffcocrap.com to purchase bumper stickers, t-shirts and similar items, with a portion of the proceeds going to cover the principal of the county’s mounting debt. You can also check out the Jefferson County Sewer Flush over on YouTube.
We still have a feeling that it would take a long time for the money to pile up.

Random Shots: That’s a big box to fill up
We figured you’d enjoy these images from this afternoon’s installation of the first of several large “IN” Birmingham ballot boxes across metro Birmingham.
NOTE: There are more images from the installation available for viewing – just click on the image to see them.
We’ve talked about this project late last month when it was officially announced. This one is located in front of the Belk at Brookwood Village. Based on what we learned today, you’ll have several chances to make sure your suggestions are heard.
There will be about 50 (much smaller) boxes located throughout the area (and a few more big ones), allowing participants to share their favorite “in” spot. The collected results will be used to create a guide that will be distributed to visitors to the city and its surrounding area.
