The word from Birmingham’s {head}:sub/head is that the Vestavia Hills independent bookstore Milestone Books, open for nearly six years, has announced its intention to close. Owner Linda Brown’s email to patrons (posted in its entirety on the popular book blog maintained by former Terminal contributor Travis Bryant) includes a caveat that led to the choice of words for our headline – if someone is interested in acquiring the assets of the store, they’ve got until January 17 to contact her. Otherwise, the inventory sale begins the following day.

The snowfall across the pond
As we wait for the pending snow event arrive in Central Alabama, we figured it would be a good idea to take a look across the Atlantic at what residents in the United Kingdom and Ireland are going through.
Our friends at the Birmingham Post have two photo galleries (check out their Iron Man in the second link) and a live blog with updates from around the region. The photo accompanying this piece was taken about earlier today in Arborfield. An American in Ireland decided fill his readers in on the similarities between how prepared Dublin and Birmingham are to handle any accumulation.
All we ask is that you take care of yourselves out there tomorrow.

A Festivus gift for one of us
We’ve got this Griffin Technology AirCurve that we’ve been wanting to give away for some time now. The thought of doing it today just seems to make some sense. There’s no form to fill out or need to add your name to a mailing list. We’re just hoping that we’ll get a chance to see you today at The Bottletree.
Some folks are holding a Festivus tweetup this afternoon starting at 3 p.m. at the popular gathering spot and music venue. All we’re requiring is that you seek me out at said event and say “It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham.”

Help draw Birmingham’s blueprint
You don’t have much time left to help the Birmingham Business Alliance draw up a blueprint for The Magic City’s future.
An online survey is now available through tomorrow (December 23) that allows for you to add your voice to this planning initiative. Market Street Services of Atlanta, GA has coordinated the effort that has included focus group meetings with business leaders, area young professionals and others considered key stakeholders in Birmingham’s future. It appears that the final report which will be posted online, demonstrating the transparency that BBA president Dalton Smith spoke of when the new organization launched earlier this year.

Detours abound at Children’s Hospital
Children’s Hospital has just announced that there will be traffic detours as a result of construction on their new facility through January 2, 2010.
Motorists will want to avoid 5th Avenue South between 16th and 17th Streets. We’re assuming that you’ll want to definitely avoid it around evening rush hour – though it is the holidays so traffic may be reduced just enough where it may not affect things that much.
