One more place to climb soon

David Hemphill climbs a new route he created at Steele called Pappillon, 5.10 +. Hemphill named the route for his 6-yr-old daughter. The rating of 5.10+ tells climbers how difficult a climb is. Rates start at 5.0, being the easiest and 5.14 and up are the hardest.

The Southeastern Climbers Coalition (SCC) has just signed a contract to purchase a portion of the cliff line at Steele, AL. The non-profit climbing organization paid $55,000 for the 25.59 acre tract. The area has been closed since 1987 due to private land owner access issues. The tract has about 1,400 linear feet of cliffline and includes several cliff areas and it is estimated to have 30 to 50 routes. The SCC hopes to open the area to climbing this summer. The cliffline is located 45 minutes from Birmingham in Steele, AL.

The Gardens have gone 2.0

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens have been embracing the world of social media in recent weeks, introducing a Twitter feed, @bbgardens, as well as launching a new blog called The Garden Dirt Blog. In addition, they have a Flickr profile and a fan page on Facebook.

An ever influential virtual influence on people learning about one of the state’s largest natural physical destinations.

There’s a push for a Trader Joe’s

… and I do mean a push. Fans of Trader Joe’s in metro Birmingham are leading an effort to get the Monrovia, CA-based company to put a location here. They’ve created a Facebook group to hopefully get the attention of the privately held business. The group is starting to grow – it’s sitting at 129 members as this post is written, with folks in the group leaning towards the store’s placement on the city’s east side, particularly Woodlawn or Crestwood. One of the distribution centers is in Atlanta, so apparently it wouldn’t be that big of a stretch… Plus it would give folks another option if they were able to buy gourmet beer after tomorrow’s vote.

Birmingham’s FINALLY going to run on Dunkin – again

UPDATE: 2.1.2010 – It’s finally opened – in Pelham, AL.

Dunkin Donuts logo - Dunkindonuts.com Remember that post back in August of 2007 when we linked to the BBJ’s story about Dunkin’ Donuts planning to open 72 metro Birmingham locations in the coming years. The market’s been open since early 2008 and this morning they finally took a step towards making it come true.

The Canton, MA-based company signed a multi-unit store development agreement with Birmingham-based RFS, LLC earlier today. The agreement calls for the development of 21 restaurants in the Birmingham market. RFS plans to open its first location in the next 12 months, fulfilling its agreement within the next 5 to 6 years. It will be the first time in years that the metro area has had a Dunkin’ Donuts location.

This isn’t to say you can’t get Dunkin’ Donuts in the state now – you’d just have to drive to Dothan (they got their first location last month).

OK, it got delayed, but…

Yesterday the Birmingham City Council delayed a vote on council agenda Item #17, which at first glance would look like a direct correlation with the title of yesterday’s On the Agenda post. If approved, it would move forward plans to complete phase II of the city’s intermodal transit facility on Morris Avenue.

That is, until you let Birmingham Weekly‘s Kyle Whitmire and The Birmingham News‘ Joseph Bryant fill in the details about the concerns regarding the potential involvement of Larry Langford‘s mayoral campaign manager and CEO of Matrix, LLC, Jeff Pitts.

Travelogue: Preservation in Pink looks at B’ham’s history

Of course, this means a series of posts on the preservation-issues site, beginning with this one on Kelly Ingram Park and its historic surroundings. It should be an interesting series.

Sigler makes Ebony’s Top 30 under 30 list

Marquelon Sigler has become the second person from Birmingham, AL in three years to be included in Ebony Magazine‘s Top 30 under 30 Young Leaders of the Future 2009. Sigler, a native of the Magic City, stays pretty busy working for Exford LLC/ Southern Real Estate Group as both their director of property acquisition and a realtor while being active in so many organizations, we’d be here a while if we listed them all. Plus, there wouldn’t be a reason for you to run out and pick up the current issue of Ebony, now would there?
