No more Super 6 in Birmingham

super_six_logoFootball is more than a pastime in Alabama, and the crowds that gather at the annual Super 6 state football championships here in Birmingham at Legion Field represent that status more than anything else. Make that used to represent…

This afternoon CBS 42 broke the news that the championships would no longer be played in The Magic City and instead alternate between Tuscaloosa and Auburn, just like the Iron Bowl decided before it.

What does it mean to our local economy? Representatives from Birmingham’s Convention and Visitors Bureau told Chris Pollone of NBC 13 that they think it could cost the region more than $4 million.

We do get to keep the state basketball championships, but some are already arguing that a multipurpose facility’s time has finally come.

Langford to host town hall meetings

There are actually two stories that are taking place at the same time. First of all is the fact that The City of Birmingham’s Office of Public Information is on Facebook. The group is the latest move by the city to reach out to residents online.

Larry LangfordNow onto the reason for the post – Mayor Larry Langford is hosting a series of town hall meetings throughout the city. The first one, called “Why Birmingham Can’t Wait,” will take place on Thursday evening at Boutwell Auditorium beginning at 6 p.m. Additional ones will be held at area churches in the coming weeks, providing residents with the opportunity to ask the mayor and other representatives about current initiatives and learn about projects such as the planned repaving of neighborhood streets. You get to submit your questions for the mayor to ask as well in advance – via email to opi@birminghamal.gov. If you can’t make it to Boutwell, Fox 6 is scheduled to stream the event on its website.

UPDATE: For the love of squirrels atop Red Mountain

UPDATE #2: We’re happy to report that it was an issue with Twitter, and its profile is up again as of 9 p.m.

UPDATE: A quick check of the profile at 8:30 p.m. shows that it’s been taken down.

Seriously…

Apparently one of Birmingham’s furry “critters” has been visiting the news set at NBC 13‘s studios atop Red Mountain, notably during the morning broadcasts. How popular has the squirrel become? It’s already got its own Twitter profile (and 63 followers already).

All we can hope is that it doesn’t get to the point where it’s not getting fed making it bad for others or worse, it decides to make its presence known in a more visible fashion

Like Father, Like Son

Terminal, Earl Hilliard Jr.

Earl Hilliard Jr. shares a moment with his father and former holder of the 7th Congressional District seat, Earl Hilliard Sr., at Kelly Ingram Park Monday morning after a press conference announcing the junior Hilliard’s candidacy that seat. Hillard Sr. lost his seat to Artur Davis in 2003 who Hilliard Jr. wants to replace. The senior Hilliard held the seat for 10 years and was the first black congressman from Alabama since reconstruction. Earl Hilliard Jr. is a first term State Rep. and was recently named freshman legislator of the year by the House Democratic Caucus.

All kinds of stuff going on…

We were just a little quiet today over here, save for the “deluge” of information shared in the last hour or so. It would be a shame if you didn’t head on over to Timetable as well and check out Jason’s picks for the weekend, including a chance to support someone who’s supported us a lot at Bare Hands Gallery and Josh’s info on the restaurant that’s taking over the former Copeland’s space down there on 280.

Enjoy the ride! And we will have a little more information later on this evening.

There’ll be a tea party in Hoover on Tax Day

tea-bagBirmingham will have its own Tax Day Conservative Tea Party in Hoover come April 15th. You may have heard about this effort recently organized by groups like Smart Girl Politics and TCOT (Top Conservatives on Twitter) and promoted on conservative talk radio shows (including Sean Hannity’s and Glenn Beck’s), to protest and expose the alleged bankrupt liberal agenda of the White House Administration and Congress, specifically President Obama’s stimulus bill and his proposed budget.

There will be two rallies in metro Birmingham, with the larger one taking place at Hoover’s Veterans Park from 6:30 – 9 p.m. It will include appearances by local radio personalities Steve and Leah, Matt Murphy and Lee Davis. Conservative radio personality Sean Hannity will also be doing a live stream and interviews from the Veterans Park rally during his radio show that day.

For more information or to volunteer, check out the Facebook page with photos, video and information.
