No, we’re not kidding… we are giving away one (1) family four pack of tickets to next week’s performances of Dora the Explorer LIVE! Search for the City of Lost Toys at the BJCC Concert Hall courtesy of Nickelodeon and Broadway Across America. There will be three performances in two days, June 9 & 10, and the lucky winner will need to be available for any of the times (Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. with a matinee performance at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday).

Pay cuts, part-time layoffs at The News

News buildingsWe’re joining Birmingham Weekly in reporting that The Birmingham News has made an additional 7% average reduction in salaries for its full-time employees. They also announced the closure of all suburban news bureaus by September and layoffs of some part-time employees, though there are no additional furloughs expected for now.

We also learned that employees at The Anniston Star and its subsidiairies found out that they would also be experiencing a 10% reduction in salary, just days after launching its new website. 

Ike Pigott broke both stories via Twitter earlier this afternoon.

Yeah, Century Plaza is closed

The Birmingham News recently shared the news that Century Plaza had officially closed (save for the Sears location which will still be open through June 14) effective Sunday evening.

NBC 13 provided visitors to their website the chance to read the press release from the mall’s owner, General Growth Properties, distributed yesterday morning while Fox 6 garnered comments from city councilmember Carol Duncan and others, leading us to today’s Magic City Question,

Help us shift gears starting tonight

We’re going to host a meeting this evening (Tuesday, June 2) at 5:30 p.m.upstairs at Shift WorkSpace (@2308 2nd Avenue North) for those interested in contributing to bhamterminal.com in all of the ways that you can think of (writing, photography, video, audio, etc.). 

We’ll talk a little bit about the direction that the site plans to go in the next few months and about interest in some long term projects that we’d like to implement. Plus, you get to see our new offices. You’ll want to come in through the door to the right of the main entrance.

Meet Shark and Ray

Shark and Ray are going to be featured in a new series of shorts that will be posted on YouTube (the first of which was posted today) in conjunction with their Wish for Fish campaign which will culminate with a new Shark and Ray aquarium in July. Pro mountain bikers come for South’s finest

picture-1Believe it or not Birmingham is a bicycle-racing town.  If you need proof consider this weekend’s Bump N’ Grind mountain bike race.  Presented by Birmingham Urban Mountain Pedalers (B.U.M.P.), this year’s event marks the fifteenth year that the single track at Oak Mountain State Park has challenged pro and amateur racers from around the country.  This race is arguably the best mountain bike race in the South (as well as the largest), so if you we’re planning a bike ride this weekend Oak Mountain is the place to be. Not only will you get to enjoy the park but you’ll have the treat of catching a glimpse of pro mountain bikers as they rail across the park and through the trails.

Party at Shift WorkSpace tonight!

shift_work_space_logo1The paint’s dry, the furniture’s assembled and the front door is ready to be open to visitors at Shift WorkSpace this evening. One of Alabama’s first coworking space (and our new offline home) will host a grand opening event tonight (May 28) beginning at 5 p.m. The space and its founder, Drew Jones, has garnered a great deal of press recently, including a follow up brief about tonight’s opening in the BBJ and a story in today’s edition of The Birmingham News (it’s in the business section). There’s still time to RSVP, though at this point, you may just want to come on over and see what the excitement’s about.
