Will World Cup Soccer return to Birmingham?

Soccer ball. thebuffafamily/FlickrLost in the talk about the City Council approving an extra $250,000 for this year’s City Stages (bringing the total amount to $550,000) was the announcement by Mayor Langford that Birmingham, AL would be submitting a proposal to be one of the facilities that could be used for the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Now, to put this in perspective, there are 37 potential host cities (with 45 facilities total) across the United States being asked to submit for a chance to hose the soccer matches. The hope is to have the final list ready by the end of the year, allowing them to be included in the bid book, due in May 2010.

If successful, it would be the first time Birmingham sees World Cup action since the 2005 qualifying match between the U.S. and Guatemala at Legion Field. The U.S. is competing against several countries for the honor, including the United Kingdom, meaning that our sister city across the pond wants in on it too.

So, Ken found us

Long-time residents of Birmingham and fans of Beaner and Ken may be wondering if the voice of Vulcan the Merman in the Shark and Ray video series created by Provenance Digital Media for McWane Science Center sounds familiar for a reason…

tk-tmp-logo-signatureWell, we’ll answer this another way… This morning we got an email from Ken thanking us for posting the screenshot and link from the Beaner and Ken website last May and letting us know about his new gig he started two weeks ago in his new Southern hometown – Columbia, SC.

Accoding to Ken, the new Tyler and Ken Show (the blog’s up, the website’s coming) is doing really well and it’s available via audio stream at New 92 Country’s (yes, country’s) website. They’re also working on their own site.

We also think you’ll appreciate this note from Ken – after the jump that is… Continue reading

It will be a chance for more than 30 young professional organizations from throughout metro Birmingham and their memberships to mingle with each other and potential new members. The Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce‘s Meredith Davidson was recently interviewed by Magic City Living about the event and while there’s not time to register online for tonight’s event, which starts at 5:30 p.m., it is free and open to the public.

Today’s my Birmingham post deals with the question asked in the official press release for the event – What’s next?

On the agenda: One laptop per councilor

In case you missed it yesterday morning, Mayor Langford presented each of the members of the Birmingham City Council with an HP Mini notebook, comple with capability to connect to the Internet using WiFi and an AirCard courtesy of Verizon Wireless. They also received an 8 GB jump drive containing several city reports, including the budget that they are currently working on and a bag to carry it all in; Birmingham Weekly tweeted a description of the embroidered message. A series of classes will be offered for those councilors and city employees that are interested.

The Birmingham News pointed out the total cost of the expenditure in today’s paper, as well as the status of the budget that seems to have encouraged their distribution.

“an Apple Store for health”

These young ladies were taking part in this morning’s Wii bowling tournament at the open house for The Blue Store in Trussville. It’s been described by some as “an Apple Store for health” and I think you’ll agree with that statement when you get there. There’s even an interactive station for checking blood pressure and weight and the ability to access their Be Healthy website.

Helicopter mysteriously hovers over The Summit

A helicopter was seen and heard hovering less than 100 feet above Joe Muggs and The Cheesecake Factory’s patio around 12 p.m. Saturday afternoon. It stayed overhead for about 15 minutes and changed directions a few times. This seemed to cause some distraction and confusion on Summit Blvd. (the main road through the Summit) and started blowing a slight wind and dust on the patios for Joe Muggs, California Pizza Kitchen and The Cheescake Factory.

It could be assumed that it was a news crew or photographer getting footage of The Summit’s new phase 6 construction.

If anyone has any info on the mystery chopper, leave us a comment below.
