“Bridging Peace” concert, Virginia Samford Theatre

The Birmingham International Center offers the “Bridging Peace: The Sounds of Jordan and Israel in Perfect Harmony” concert this Saturday. The Intercultural Journeys Ensemble will perform music from Jordan and Israel in addition to newly composed pieces which blend Middle Eastern sounds with Western tradition.

The concert is offered as part of the Birmingham International Center’s 2007-2008 spotlight on the state of Israel and the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan. The price of admission includes dinner and drinks, admission to the concert and after-concert dessert.

“Garden Party with a City View,” Jones Valley Urban Farm

The advisory board of Bare Hands Gallery invites everyone to this community event to raise funds for the gallery’s public education initiatives, exhibits and events. “The Garden Party with A City View” is scheduled for Saturday from 7-10 p.m. at Jones Valley Urban Farm, located at the corner of 7th Avenue North and 25th Street in Downtown Birmingham.

Don your finest garden attire and enjoy live music from Bo Butler and the Nice Boys, and the White Oaks, complimentary drinks provided by International Wines, and delicious food from local restaurants including Urban Standard, Franklin’s Homewood Gourmet, Lucy’s Coffee & Tea, Icon Restaurant, Cosmos, Bottletree, Healthy Connections, Rojo & more. There will also be fun door prizes.

Local artists will contribute elaborate centerpieces that will be on display that evening to help raise funds. Partygoers will have the chance to vote on their favorite pieces. Tickets are $25 before May 9 and $30 day of and at door. Available in person at Bare Hands Gallery or by calling (205) 324.2124.

Bare Hands Gallery is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization championing Alabama contemporary artists. It is located at 109 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd South.

The Terminally Happy Hour, The Bottletree

We figured we’d try this again.

Here’s how it’ll happen; we’ll show up at The Bottletree and hang out on the patio starting around 5 p.m. You’ll come on out and join us on said patio as we really hope it’s warm and not raining (although the patio is covered). We’ll have some crazy conversations going on and we’ll all be able to enjoy happy hour drink specials, Magic City Manhattans and chips and salsa.

What more do you need to enjoy a lazy Wednesday evening before the official start of summer? We thought so…

A quick note from your friendly neighborhood stationmaster here. First of all, welcome to all of you who’ve recently discovered the site. We owe a great deal to some emails in recent days that have begun to expose us to a wider audience. We do want to make sure that you’re enjoying the experience though and one recent email’s got us a little worried that folks are staying a little quiet.

We guard our email lists dearly, almost to a fault, because of how much we hate spam. Well, we got an email earlier this morning that said that after signing up for one of our email lists (though we’re still not sure which one), they started receiving spam. If you’re having that problem, we need to know! We’ve actually held off posting items today because of checking to make sure our lists were OK and not compromised. We only send out one newsletter a week using iContact, while the daily post emails are handled by FeedBurner. Those should be the only ones you’re getting from us.

Drop us a line using any of the methods listed on our contact page and let us know if this has happened to you. We’d really appreciate it.

Pepper Place Farmers Market, Pepper Place

The Pepper Place Saturday Market is in its ninth year providing residents with a place to get fresh produce while exploring one of the city’s coolest districts. The market will begin promptly at 7 a.m. and close at noon in the Pepper Place parking lot. As always, in addition to fresh produce, hand carved wooden fruit trays, wind chimes, hand blown glass, hot sauces, pottery, homemade fudge, peanut brittle and ice cream. Shoppers can also enjoy music from two stages and a weekly cooking demonstration. A chance to meet up with friends and see what Alabama has to offer in terms of produce.

Cost: Supporting area farmers and good food.
