Introducing Larry’s 8-Ball

Larry’s 8 Ball logo - WERC 960 AM

WERC 960AM’s logo for Larry’s 8 Ball. Special to The Terminal.

So maybe we’re a little envious of not thinking of this first…

The folks over at WERC-AM have decided to introduce the World Wide Web to Larry’s 8-Ball. We got an email from the ClearChannel owned station providing a link to their website’s newest feature.

It’s quite simple – think of a question, click on the ball to give it a shake and then turn up the volume to hear Larry’s answer.

Check it out for yourself.

Highway 132 Yard Sale, various locations

Think of it as your warm up for the World’s Longest Yard Sale in August.

This is the first year for this eighteen (18) mile stretch of many different antiques, collectibles, lots of odds and ends. It’s a pretty scenic drive as well even if you don’t get anything. The fun starts at the U.S. Highway 278 & Highway 132 junction and it ends in Oneonta (passing through Altoona along the way).

NOTE: We didn’t put an end time since we’ve been informed that the various participants will most likely end at different times.

Cost: Free (unless you end up buying something).

For more information, please call 205.589.6740.

The view looking at the IN sign

We figured you’d enjoy these images from this afternoon’s installation of the first of several large “IN” Birmingham ballot boxes across metro Birmingham.

NOTE: There are more images from the installation available for viewing – just click on the image to see them.

We’ve talked about this project late last month when it was officially announced. This one is located in front of the Belk at Brookwood Village. Based on what we learned today, you’ll have several chances to make sure your suggestions are heard.

There will be about 50 (much smaller) boxes located throughout the area (and a few more big ones), allowing participants to share their favorite “in” spot. The collected results will be used to create a guide that will be distributed to visitors to the city and its surrounding area.

The best super value meal ever…

That’s got to be what Birmingham resident Jeff Dubuisson, a Compass Bank customer, is thinking right now. He has won $1 million in the Visa™ Your Life, More Wonderful sweepstakes for using his Visa check card to purchase $5.98 in food at a local Wendy’s restaurant. He will now receive $50,000 each December for the next 20 years.

Compass Bank and Visa Inc. will present Dubuisson with his prize during halftime at the University of Alabama at Birmingham vs. University of Houston basketball game at the Bartow Arena on Feb. 20.

Travelogue: So which Birmingham do the Tory MEPs really represent?

We do normally start our day out with John’s A Look Back column, (which will make an appearance around 8 a.m. today) but we figured we couldn’t pass up this opportunity to point out something from “across the pond.”

We can thank Tom Watson for pointing out this error on this regional site for the English conservative party.

How much do you know about Alabama?

That’s the question that the Hartselle Enquirer put to their readers in the form of this 20-question quiz about Sweet Home Alabama

Thanks to Bessemer Opinions for shining some light on this really cool knowledge tester.

How about letting us know how well you do?

Random Shots: Birmingham helps prep for Tournament of Roses

One of the best things about the annual Tournament of Roses parade, taking place tomorrow, is the number of volunteers that help create those beautiful floats. What does this have to do with Birmingham, you ask?

A quick drive through the Lakeview district of town had many businesses closed through New Year’s Day. All of them are taking some well-deserved rest, though the folks at Hothouse Design Studio provided one of the more interesting reasons indeed:

Just in case you’re wondering just what that means, check out this image of the Rain Bird Corporation’s float, entitled Preservation Celebration.

So don’t forget to check it out on TV tomorrow!

We here hope that all of you enjoy a Happy New Year!
