TEDx attendees, organizers hope to forge Birmingham’s future

Thursday evening approximately 100 people gathered at the Avon Theater in Birmingham’s Lakeview district to take part in the city’s first ever TEDx event. Those presenting at TEDxRedMountain decided to use the event’s theme “Forge On: Galvanizing Ideas for the Future” to look at the events of April 27 while talking about how the region can and will move forward.

Event organizers Sarah Robinson and Jamie Sandford took some time to talk about the event shortly after it finished. We also had a chance to talk with Patrick Morris of UA Greek Relief.

The seven original 18-minute presentations made during the evening (including talks by James Spann, Alabama Poverty Project executive director Kristina Scott and Jefferson County EMA‘s Mark Kelly) will soon be available for viewing at the event’s official website. There’s already another TEDx event currently scheduled for September (yes, September, they confirmed they’re moving the date back last night).

Incidentally, the last speaker of the evening, Scott Pierce, is today’s subject for It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham – head on over and check it out.

We take a look at coworking tonight in Woodlawn

Beaufort Coworking. khawkins04/FlickrAre you interested in seeing if coworking is right for you? Want to learn more about the options that currently exist in Birmingham, AL and the metropolitan area? Do you want to help us determine how or if coworking can fit into a vision of a physical home for The Terminal?

These and other questions will be the focus of a meeting taking place tonight in the Woodlawn neighborhood at Woodrow Hall (directions). We’re teaming with Main Street Birmingham to host this BYOB networking event from 6-7:30 p.m. Networking starts a 6 p.m.; the program at 6:30 p.m.

This is a follow-up from our coworking interest survey from this spring (which we’ve re-opened for those who are now learning about it). We’ve shared the results on a special section of the site as well as a video featuring some of coworking’s pioneers explaining exactly what it is that makes it different from just sharing office space.

We’re looking forward to seeing some of you there tonight (or hearing from you via the survey)!

You’ll need a ticket to get in to hear Stanford University’s former provost speak even though it is a free event and they first will go to students, faculty, staff and alumni before being opened to the general public (as it should be).

Those interested in securing whatever tickets may be left are encouraged to fill out the request form at the bottom of the page announcing the lecture located on the college’s website. They’ve got all of the other information that you’ll need over there as well.

Ludacris says he’s not playing Heritage Fest

UPDATE: 8.11.2009 – The organizers of the Birmingham Heritage Festival  have announced that this year’s event has been canceled. The Birmingham News has the details.

Apparently the reduction in ticket prices last weekend for this weekend’s Birmingham Heritage Festival has encouraged its organizers to move forward with it (at least according to the front page of their official website. Those who bought tickets to see Ludacris at the festival on Friday night though may be a little disappointed; the hip-hop star sent out the following tweet last night:

Bogus promoter alert!!! Birmingham, AL Heritage festival, completely false. Luda will not be there so don’t buy tickets!!!

Pepper Place Market’s 10th year starts Saturday

Franklin Biggs Fans of the Pepper Place Saturday Market already know that their wait is almost over. In less than two days the parking lot for the former Dr. Pepper building in Pepper Place on Birmingham’s Southside will be transformed on Saturday mornings from 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. into an organic farmers market. This year, the farmers market will run for 22 consecutive Saturdays, going through October 10 rain or shine. It will also be celebrating its tenth anniversary. As usual, 2nd Avenue South between 28th and 29th Streets will be blocked off.

This week’s 9 a.m. cooking demonstration will be conducted by Daniel George‘s Chef Daniel Briggs. Maybe he’ll have as much fun as Franklin Biggs did a couple of years ago
