Mayor Langford will be among the many in attendance at Linn Park tomorrow morning beginning at 11 a.m. as part of Wachovia’s Way2Save Challenge. Birmingham is the current stop on an 11-city tour that aims to educate consumers about the importance of saving. Some of our city’s youngest residents, pre-K students from John Herbert Phillips Academy, will learn to save their pennies in a piggy bank activity, while some of our other residents will be trying to make sure that more students have a chance to further their education, in a fun way…

The other guys cover the Mims situation
First of all, here’s a link to the report that everyone’s been talking about surrounding the city of Birmingham’s school system.
Now let’s take a look at how the local media’s been covering this story since it broke yesterday…
Throughout most of last night’s coverage, outlets stressed Mims’ acceptance of responsibility for the existence of two reports. Perhaps the best example of this is in NBC 13’s coverage. They were also able to provide the opinion of the state superintendent, who was in town for the proceedings.

Collective Perspectives continues at Vulcan Park
Part two of Vulcan Park‘s 2008 Collective Perspectives series, “Way Down South in Birmingham,” will take place on Tuesday, February 12 and feature Miles College jazz band director Daniel Western.
The series, entitled Neighborhoods: Artful Excursions Through Birmingham’s African-American Communities, is a celebration of Black history. Audra Bean, Vulcan Park’s director of marketing and public relations, describes it as “… a series of non-traditional programs that enlighten and educate people in Birmingham,” taking a deeper look at the city’s Black communities such as Ensley and Titusville through music, oral history, documentary film and folk art. Since Vulcan is seen as the center of Birmingham, Bean felt like the center should be educating people about the city’s past.

Spain Park makes Vatican Radio
No, it’s not nearly as cool as having video from their performance in Vatican City (which you really should take a look at), it is a chance to hear Spain Park’s director talk about how great an experience this opportunity to perform for the Pope was to the students and the parents that accompanied the band on the trip.
It’s also a chance to make sure folks know that this exists, since the school was identified both in the text and in the intro to the piece as Spring Park High School. Oh well… the fact that they were able to perform was most important.
