Meet Shark and Ray

shark-and-ray-still McWane Science Center‘s introducing their two newest online stars today. Shark and Ray are going to be featured in a new series of shorts that will be posted on YouTube (the first of which was posted today) in conjunction with their Wish for Fish campaign which will culminate with a new Shark and Ray aquarium in July. If you want to keep up with their latest adventures, you can follow them on Twitter or Facebook as well.

bhamcentral.com has launched

Attendees to this year’s BarCamp Birmingham had the opportunity to hear from Harris Reynolds about the experience of developing and launching a new website in one week – bhamcentral.com. Harris felt the need to explore and provide a solution to the issue of the online community portal.

You can read what was driving his desire to create one on his blog, Simplifying Software, check out the presentation on Vimeo (and think about checking out all of the other presentations from BarCamp as they become available) and try bhamcentral.com out for yourself and see what you think.

The mayor… in an Indy Car?

Imagine my surprise when the FedEx delivery guy comes in where I’m sitting in downtown Birmingham and asks if any of us saw the Indy Car speeding down 20^th Street North yesterday morning with Mayor Larry Langford driving. None of us there had, but, after some digging around on Twitter, we found at least one photo floating around online (thanks @vulcansmuse & @rachelpinson). Plus, there’s also this video courtesy of Fox 6 available on their site this morning.

Turns out the mayor wasn’t behind the wheel, but enjoying the ride as he reminded folks about this weekend’s Indy Car test runs out at Barber. Others who were out at the Firestone store in Pelham had the same opportunity to ride in an Indy Car yesterday afternoon.

There were some folks though that wished that they had seen the mayor in person later in the day… in Southtown.

The State of the Railroad Park is good

The current news surrounding Railroad Park is good with Birmingham City Council committees moving forward a proposal that would allowMayor Langford to pledge $5 million for construction of the 3,000 seat amphitheater. While unforseen circumstances have called for some changes from the master plan developed by Tom Leader Studio, it will still be a significant addition to Birmingham’s city center. There may be some that still think that the conversation about the park is premature.

One quick drive by the site in recent weeks though would lead you to have a different feeling about it – like progress since work began on the site December 23. It’s currently on schedule to be a Christmas/New Year’s gift to the city.

Obama Inspired Art in Georgetown

So besides finally realizing that the throngs of people are starting to arrive here in town, I’ve also found some very interesting free activities that have been available to visitors over the weekend. This exhibit closes tonight, but thanks to the fun of the web, and The Terminal’s YouTube channel, portions of it will live on for a little while longer…
