Happy Thanksgiving!

WishUponACupcake/FlickrBirmingham’s just a little quieter than normal as people begin to make that journey over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house (or wherever their journeys may be taking them today). It is known as the busiest traveling day of the year, but we knew there’d be a few of you checking in…

So we’re hoping that you’ll be willing to share your stories with the rest of The Terminal’s community during the next couple of days. Today’s Magic City Question hopes that we’ll learn more about long-standing and new traditions for the holiday while we’re taking a page out of The New York Times‘ book and seeing if folks are willing to share photos of their pending feasts and all of the preparation that goes along with it.

No matter what you choose to do, we hope that you enjoy Thanksgiving tomorrow!

Anyone interested in photowalking?

Birmingham Skyline, Southern Pixel/FlickrThere seems to be a renewed interest in capturing snapshots of Birmingham’s daily activities. Scott Schablow has recently tweeted about wanting to reorganize a lunchtime photowalking group (contact him directly if you’re interested) while the Magic City Flickr Group started sharing their photo of the day via the popular microblogging network.

We’re even using the photos submitted via Flickr to our Terminal Flickr Group as part of our Late Arrivals post at the end of the day (we’re adding another way to submit photos to the site tomorrow). There are several photo blogs in metro Birmingham as well – so why not add the names and URLs of those sites to the comments section…

Share your snow photos with The Terminal

A snowman on the Birmingham Green acnatta/FlickrThe Magic City looks more like a winter wonderland this morning than normal after a snowstorm passed through the city yesterday afternoon and evening, leaving the city with a rare 1-2″ inches of snow depending on where you were.

Whether at the Railroad Park construction site, the Birmingham Green (shown here) or over the mountain, It looked pretty cool yesterday and it’s a safe bet that you thought so too.

A photo gallery’s been set up on the site to showcase snowfall images you may want to share from yesterday or today. A few photos have already up too and we’re hoping that you’ll feel like adding yours to the mix. There will be definitely be some additional photos posted during the day from the site’s contributors.

Hopefully you were able to stay safe last night as roads iced over and area officials made the right decision to close most state highways and access to elevated portions of metro Birmingham interstates. Continue to use caution while out there this morning.

A historic stroll through Birmingham is expanded

Birmingham's Civil Rights Walking Trail expandsFolks walking along 6th Avenue North between 19th and 17th Streets in downtown Birmingham may notice some large orange signs now located along the sidewalk. The four signs are the latest additions to the Birmingham Civil Rights Heritage Trail, first unveiled in August 2009. As first reported by The Birmingham News when the first signs were unveiled, the first portion of the trail will take people from Kelly Ingram Park to Linn Park.

This sign is located at the corner of 19th Street and 6th Avenue North in front of First Church Birmingham.

Railroad’s next phase

RRP-Amphitheater

There’s been a lot of conversations about Railroad Park recently, particularly about the status of work on what’s been called Birmingham, AL’s living room. Two weeks ago during a presentation at the Operation New Birmingham breakfast, attendees were given an update on the progress of Railroad Park, complete with renderings of the proposed 3,000-seat amphitheater and of the signage that would great users as they entered from the corners. Funds must still be raised for its construction, which means it will most likely not be completed until it is a part of phase II of the site’s development

WordCamp Birmingham, Social South launch websites

We’ve been silent for the past few days (well, we were saying stuff on Twitter, but for the most part that means that we’ve been silent for the past few days…).

WordCamp Birmingham logoOur reason for silence – the launching of the new WordCamp Birmingham website just in time to open registration (complete with an early bird discount) and announce a call for speakers and sponsors for September 26 & 27. We’re still wondering if Matt Mullenweg will choose to wear his black Terminal T while he’s presenting, but we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, head on over and check it out.

FYI, Social South also unveiled its site last week. The first edition of this social media conference will take place here in The Magic City on August 21 & 22. They’ve also announced an early bird registration fee.
